Cheirodon galusdae is a small characid tetra endemic to the Pacific-draining rivers of central Chile — one of the few freshwater fish in South America that occurs west of the Andes in temperate latitudes. Taxonomy & naming

Cheirodon galusdae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1928. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS reference 26616) records the valid name as Cheirodon galusdae Eigenmann, 1928; the spelling Cheirodon galusdai (with a terminal 'i') appears as a synonym and misspelling in FishBase and morphometrics databases but is not the accepted form. The genus Cheirodon is a small South American characid lineage, and C. galusdae is notable among its relatives for occurring on the Pacific versant — an unusual biogeographic position for a Neotropical tetra.

The species belongs to the family Characidae in the order Characiformes, the broad assemblage of tetras, piranhas, and their allies that dominates Neotropical freshwater fish diversity. Continued monitoring of population trends across the Biobío, Maule, La Araucanía, and Los Lagos systems is warranted.
