Taxonomy & naming

Cheirodon jaguaribensis was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1941. The type locality is the rio Jaguaribe at Russas, in Ceará State, northeastern Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Cheirodon jaguaribensis Fowler, 1941.

The species is placed as Incertae sedis within Characidae rather than in a formally resolved subfamily position, and notes in both FishBase and the ETYFish Project indicate it likely belongs in a different genus pending revision — a common situation among small South American characids whose placement awaits modern phylogenetic treatment. Until such a revision is published, the Catalog of Fishes governing the valid name retains it in Cheirodon.
