Cheirodon interruptus is a small, silvery characid native to the subtropical river systems of the Río de la Plata basin and adjacent Atlantic drainages — a fish that ranges from the Tramandaí drainage in southern Brazil down through Uruguay and into the Río Colorado in Argentina, spanning one of South America's most ecologically diverse freshwater provinces. Modest in appearance but hardy and adaptable, it tolerates a remarkably broad thermal range, from cool southern winters to warm summer shallows, and its omnivorous habits make it a generalist well suited to a wide range of aquarium conditions.

Taxonomy & naming

Cheirodon interruptus was originally described by Leonard Jenyns in 1842 based on material collected during the voyage of HMS Beagle, with the type locality recorded as Laguna del Diario, Maldonado, Uruguay (approximately 34°54′S, 55°00′W). Because the original describer is not the current genus author, the authority appears in parentheses: (Jenyns, 1842). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Cheirodon interruptus (Jenyns, 1842) within the family Characidae; this placement is followed here.

The genus Cheirodon belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae within the broader Characidae, a vast family that encompasses most of the tetras of South America. Cheirodon is a comparatively small genus of small-bodied characids centred on the temperate and subtropical Atlantic slope drainages of southern South America, and C. interruptus is its most widespread and best-known member. Its wide range — from southern Brazil through Uruguay and well into Argentina — along with its establishment in introduced populations in Chile, suggests it is both ecologically flexible and capable of thriving outside its native range where conditions are suitable.

Morphology

Cheirodon interruptus is a small, slender-bodied tetra. FishBase records a maximum standard length of approximately 2.5 in for males and up to 2.5 in total length for females, making it one of the larger members of its genus. The body is laterally compressed and relatively streamlined, with the typical tetra profile: a moderately high body, a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin.

Colouration is subdued but characteristic: the flanks are silvery with a slight golden or brassy sheen in some lights, and a dark lateral stripe or series of markings runs along the mid-body, contributing to the 'interruptus' (interrupted) pattern referenced in the specific epithet. The fins are largely clear or faintly pigmented. Like most characids, the species possesses a lateral line system and the Weberian apparatus connecting the swim bladder to the inner ear, which enhances hearing sensitivity. Sexual dimorphism is subtle in preserved specimens but becomes apparent in conditioned adults, with females appearing noticeably rounder-bodied when ripe.

Habitat

In its native range, Cheirodon interruptus occupies freshwater habitats across a broad subtropical band of eastern South America. Its native distribution spans from the Tramandaí River drainage of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, south through the Uruguay River basin and the Laguna dos Patos system, through Uruguay (where the type specimen originated), and into Argentina, extending as far south as the Río Colorado. It has also been introduced in Chile, where populations are established in the Choapa and Quilimari river systems and several estuaries — a sign of the species' tolerance for varied conditions.

The species is described as benthopelagic and freshwater, occupying the water column above and near the bottom in rivers, streams, and lakes of the temperate to subtropical Atlantic slope. Its native waters range from shallow coastal lagoons to medium-sized rivers, and it encounters a wide seasonal temperature range across its latitudinal span — research has documented thermal tolerance from below 52 °F to above 91 °F, with a preferred temperature around 56 °F suggesting an affinity for cooler conditions relative to many tropical tetras. This thermal flexibility is likely key to its broad native distribution and invasive potential.

Feeding

Cheirodon interruptus is an opportunistic omnivore. As a small, schooling characid in productive subtropical waters, it likely takes small aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, surface insects, and plant material or algae depending on local availability. FishBase records it as oviparous with benthopelagic habits, consistent with a fish that forages across the lower and middle water column.

Experimental research on the species' thermal biology documented consistent feeding behaviour across a wide range of temperatures — from treatments as cool as 54 °F to as warm as 89 °F — indicating that the fish maintains feeding activity even in cold conditions that would suppress most tropical tetras. This thermal feeding resilience likely underpins its ecological success across a latitudinal gradient spanning many degrees. In the aquarium it accepts a wide variety of standard foods: high-quality flake and small pellets as a base, supplemented with frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, and other small invertebrates to maintain condition.

Mating

Cheirodon interruptus is an egg-scattering, open spawner in the broad characid mode. Males engage females with brief courtship pursuits, and spawning takes place among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or in open water, with eggs scattered and left to fall where they may. There is no parental care: adults show no interest in guarding eggs or fry, and may actively prey on their own spawn.

Being a subtropical species with a wide thermal range, courtship and spawning are likely triggered or enhanced by seasonal temperature shifts, day-length cues, and the arrival of fresh, oxygenated water — conditions that mimic the onset of spring flooding in its native river systems. In the aquarium, providing a temperature rise, a water change with slightly cooler water, and fine-leaved plants or spawning mops will simulate these seasonal triggers and can prompt spawning behaviour in conditioned adults.

Breeding

Breeding Cheirodon interruptus in captivity follows the standard small-tetra protocol. Conditioned adults are moved to a dedicated breeding tank furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, or with synthetic spawning mops, over which the pair or group scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs. The adults should be removed after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs.

Given the species' subtropical origins and preference for cooler temperatures, breeding temperatures in the range of 64–75 °F are appropriate; water that is soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral suits the species' Atlantic-slope origins. Eggs are small and relatively numerous; incubation time will vary with temperature, with cooler conditions extending the hatching period relative to tropical species. Fry are tiny at hatching and require infusoria or other micro-foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered dry foods. Growth is moderate and the young fish are delicate in their first weeks.

In the aquarium

Cheirodon interruptus is an adaptable, peaceful schooling fish suited to community aquaria housing similarly sized, non-aggressive species. It is best kept in groups of eight or more to express natural schooling behaviour and to reduce stress on individual fish. As a subtropical species, it can be kept at room temperature in warmer climates or in a cool aquarium — temperatures in the range of 64–75 °F are comfortable, and it does not require the high temperatures demanded by many Amazonian tetras.

A well-planted tank with open swimming space, good filtration, and regular water changes suits the species well. It is undemanding in terms of water chemistry: neutral to slightly acidic or slightly alkaline water of moderate hardness is appropriate. The species is active in the mid and lower water column and does not compete aggressively at feeding, so care should be taken that shy individuals receive adequate food. Compatible tankmates include other small characids, peaceful rasboras, small Corydoras catfishes, and other subtropical community fish. Hardy and tolerant of a wide temperature range, it is a good choice for hobbyists maintaining unheated subtropical tanks or seasonal outdoor tubs in temperate climates.

Conservation

Cheirodon interruptus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its wide natural distribution across the Río de la Plata basin, Uruguay, and adjacent Atlantic slope drainages of Brazil and Argentina. A species that ranges across multiple major river systems and has successfully established introduced populations in Chile is not considered at immediate extinction risk.

Nevertheless, the broader Río de la Plata system faces significant anthropogenic pressure: agriculture, urban development, wetland drainage, and pollution have altered many of the shallow coastal and riparian habitats that small characids depend on. The species' establishment in Chilean river systems, while a sign of its adaptability, also raises ecological concerns about its interactions with native Chilean freshwater fauna in those introduced populations. As a common baitfish and minor aquarium species, it is unlikely to face direct commercial collection pressure, but ongoing habitat quality in its native range remains the key factor in its long-term security.
