Taxonomy & naming
Cheirodon ibicuhiensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1915 from material collected in the Uruguay River drainage; the type locality is recorded as a tributary of the Uruguay River near Ubajay, in the Entre Ríos province of Argentina. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats the valid name as Cheirodon ibicuhiensis Eigenmann, 1915, placed in the subfamily Cheirodontinae within the family Characidae. Because the species was described directly in Cheirodon and remains there, the authority is unparenthesised.
Eigenmann's original description was relatively brief, and subsequent authors revisited the species. Braun et al. (2000) and Oliveira et al. (2002) published a redescription that added diagnostic meristic and morphometric characters and corrected and expanded the species' known distribution within Argentina, according to a redescription paper archived on ResearchGate. The specific epithet refers to the Ibicuí River, a major left-bank tributary of the Uruguay River in the Rio Grande do Sul state of Brazil, reflecting part of the species' range.
Morphology
Cheirodon ibicuhiensis is a small, slender characin, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1.5 in for male or unsexed specimens. Like other cheirodontines it has the family's characteristic adipose fin, a small mouth suited to particulate feeding, and a laterally compressed, silvery body.
Detailed meristic data beyond size are sparse in general-access sources. As a member of Cheirodontinae, the species is expected to show the suite of characters typical of the subfamily — relatively few lateral-line scales, a small number of gill rakers, and a lateral-compression body form adapted to life in open water and among vegetation in lentic and slow-lotic environments. Habitat
The species is native to the Laguna dos Patos basin and the Tramandaí River basin in southern South America, with populations in Uruguay and Argentina. The type locality lies in the Entre Ríos province of northeastern Argentina, north of Parque Nacional El Palmar. FishBase describes the species as benthopelagic in freshwater environments.
Reported water parameters from FishBase indicate a preference for neutral to slightly alkaline water (pH 6.5–7.5), temperatures in the range of 73–81 °F (optimum approximately 77 °F), and soft to moderately hard water (dH under 20). This matches the character of the subtropical lowland river and lake systems of the southern cone, where temperatures track distinct seasonal cycles and water is generally clear to lightly tinted in forested catchments.
Feeding
FishBase classifies Cheirodon ibicuhiensis as omnivorous. Like most small cheirodontines it likely exploits a range of small food items encountered in the water column and at the surface: microinvertebrates, zooplankton, small insect larvae, and algae or organic detritus. As a small schooling characin it should be kept in groups of six or more; its slender 1.5 in frame makes it suitable for mid-sized community aquaria with other small, peaceable fishes. The species' subtropical origins mean it tolerates cooler temperatures than many tropical aquarium fish — 73–81 °F is appropriate — and it does not require elevated temperatures year-round.
Water chemistry should be neutral to slightly alkaline with moderate hardness, matching the natural conditions of the Laguna dos Patos and Uruguay River drainages. A planted tank with open swimming space and a dark substrate will show the fish to best advantage and reduce stress. Because it is not a widely traded species, captive stock may be uncommon in the hobby outside of specialist aquarists and fish societies with an interest in South American cheirodontines.
Conservation
The IUCN assesses Cheirodon ibicuhiensis as Least Concern (LC), with the assessment recorded by FishBase as of 4 March 2021. The species has a reasonably broad distribution across the Laguna dos Patos and Tramandaí River basins and no specific threats are documented that would place it at elevated risk at the regional scale.
The Laguna dos Patos system — the largest coastal lagoon in South America — and the associated river basins face ongoing pressures from agricultural runoff, wetland modification, and introduced species that affect native fish communities broadly. Cheirodon ibicuhiensis has not been specifically assessed for susceptibility to these pressures, but its LC status and distribution across multiple river basins suggest the population is currently stable.
