Cynopotamus atratoensis is a large, piscivorous characid reaching up to 17.5 in total length and native to the Atrato and Sinú river basins of northwestern Colombia. Unlike the jewel-coloured tetras most aquarists picture, it is a robust, predatory fish of floodplain wetlands, and is assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable owing to ongoing habitat degradation and collection pressure across its restricted Colombian range.

Taxonomy & naming

Cynopotamus atratoensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907, the parenthetical authority reflecting a subsequent generic transfer. The species is placed in the genus Cynopotamus, a group of medium-to-large predatory characids in the subfamily Bryconinae (sensu lato) or Cynopotaminae, depending on the classification followed. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name; the specific epithet atratoensis is a Latinisation of the Río Atrato, the principal river of the Chocó lowlands of Colombia, which forms the type locality.

Type specimens (USNM 1664 and 306567) are deposited at the United States National Museum of Natural History and were confirmed in the comprehensive Colombian freshwater fish checklist of Maldonado-Ocampo et al. (2008), which documents the species as part of the Colombian ichthyofauna. Cynopotamus is a relatively small genus of large characids distributed across northern South America; the genus is united by dentition characters and a broadly piscivorous trophic mode.

Morphology

Cynopotamus atratoensis is a large, elongate-bodied characid. FishBase records a maximum size of 14 in standard length (SL), while field studies from the Ciénaga Grande de Lorica in the Sinú basin report individuals from 5.5–17.5 in total length (TL), placing this among the larger members of the family. The body is fusiform and compressed, adapted for active predation in open and vegetated floodplain waters.

Like others in the genus, dentition is prominent and adapted for seizing prey fish. Commercial import records from the ornamental trade note that traded specimens commonly fall in the 7–8.5 in range. Coloration in the wild is not extensively documented in available sources, but the genus typically shows silvery to brownish flanks with a degree of lateral iridescence; precise colour data for atratoensis are sparse in the published literature.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Atrato and Sinú river basins of northwestern Colombia, in the Chocó biogeographic region and associated lowlands. These rivers drain the Pacific-slope and Caribbean-slope sides of the northern Andes and western Serranía de Abibe, flowing through extensive lowland floodplain systems that include shallow wetland lakes known locally as ciénagas. The Ciénaga Grande de Lorica in the lower Sinú basin is one documented population site.

The habitat is characteristically tropical freshwater floodplain: warm, seasonally inundated wetland and river-marginal waters with abundant aquatic vegetation and littoral cover. Cynopotamus atratoensis is a piscivore. Its dentition, body size, and guild membership in Cynopotamus all point to a diet centred on smaller fish, consistent with the ecology of the genus across northern South America. Commercial importers describe it explicitly as a fish-eating species.

In floodplain wetland habitats, large predatory characids of this type typically exploit the seasonal abundance of small fish concentrated in ciénagas and backwaters during the dry season, when water levels recede and prey density increases. Data on diet composition from field studies of this specific taxon are sparse, but the piscivorous guild assignment is well-supported by its morphology and its genus-level feeding ecology.

Mating

No specific observations of courtship behaviour in Cynopotamus atratoensis have been published in the accessible literature. As a large characid in the broader Cynopotaminae assemblage, it is expected to follow the general characid pattern of open-water egg scattering, in which males pursue females and spawning occurs without the formation of lasting pair bonds. Sexual dimorphism in large piscivorous characids is often subtle externally, though females may be fuller-bodied when gravid.

Given the floodplain ecology of the Atrato and Sinú systems, spawning is likely tied to the seasonal flood pulse, as is common across large neotropical characids: rising water levels trigger gonadal development and spawning migrations, with eggs deposited in flooded marginal vegetation. This ecological context is inferred from the biology of related species and the regional hydrology; direct observations for this species are not recorded in the available sources.

Breeding

Reproductive details specific to Cynopotamus atratoensis in captivity or in detailed field studies are not documented in the available literature. Like other large predatory characids, it almost certainly spawns as a broadcast egg-scatterer with no parental care: eggs released into open water or among aquatic vegetation and left to hatch unattended. In the aquarium

Cynopotamus atratoensis occasionally enters the ornamental trade as a novelty or species-specific import; specimens in the 7–8.5 in range have been documented in commercial shipments. Aquarium Glaser, a German wholesale importer, noted specimens in 2011, and the species is described as peaceful toward conspecifics despite its piscivorous nature, though any smaller tankmate fish would be at risk.

Given the potential adult size of 14–17.5 in, this is a fish requiring a very large aquarium and an experienced keeper. Water conditions of around 81 °F and neutral pH are indicated by import records. The piscivorous diet means live or large meaty foods are necessary; acclimation to prepared foods would require patience. The species is not suitable for community aquaria and is best regarded as a specialist's fish. Its IUCN Vulnerable status further argues for caution about wild-collected specimens; hobbyist demand for such species can compound collection pressure on already-restricted wild populations.

Conservation

Cynopotamus atratoensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated October 2014 and criterion A2d cited. This criterion reflects a suspected population decline based on actual or potential levels of exploitation — in this case, collection for the ornamental fish trade alongside habitat degradation in the Colombian floodplain systems the species occupies.

The Atrato and Sinú river basins face significant anthropogenic pressure from agriculture, deforestation of riparian zones, wetland drainage, and artisanal as well as commercial fisheries. The Chocó region, while globally recognised for its exceptional biodiversity, is subject to ongoing land-use change. A species endemic to just two river basins in a pressured landscape has limited capacity to absorb population losses, and the VU assessment reflects the combination of restricted range and suspected decline. Sourcing captive-bred specimens when available, and supporting conservation of the Colombian floodplain wetlands that harbour this and hundreds of other endemic species, are the most meaningful actions available to the aquarium community.
