Cynopotamus essequibensis is a moderately large, predatory characin from the coastal river drainages of the Guiana Shield — the Essequibo River of Guyana and neighbouring basins extending through Suriname, French Guiana, and the Amapá state of Brazil. Reaching up to 6.5 in standard length, it belongs to a genus of toothy, swift-water hunters built for life in current-scoured rapids rather than the open-water schooling of the smaller tetras most aquarists know. Taxonomy & naming

Cynopotamus essequibensis was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912, based on specimens from the Essequibo River drainage of what was then British Guiana, now Guyana. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) lists the valid name as Cynopotamus essequibensis Eigenmann, 1912. The type locality is the Essequibo River, Guyana — one of the major Guiana Shield river systems draining northward to the Atlantic coast.

The genus Cynopotamus belongs to the subfamily Characinae within the family Characidae. Genera in Characinae are characterised by dentition adapted for fish-eating or predation on large invertebrates, setting them apart from the smaller-bodied omnivores and planktivores that dominate the family in terms of species numbers.
