Cynopotamus argenteus was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1836 and placed originally in the old catch-all genus Tetragonopterus, under which it circulated in the older literature as Tetragonopterus argenteus. The current placement in Cynopotamus Günther, 1864 follows subsequent revisions of the Characidae that recognised this group of large, piscivorous South American characins as a distinct lineage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Cynopotamus argenteus (Valenciennes, 1836), with parenthetical authority indicating the combination has changed from the original generic assignment.
Cynopotamus is a small genus of robustly built, predatory characids distributed across the major river drainages of south-central South America.
