Taxonomy & naming

Cynopotamus juruenae was described by Naércio A. Menezes in 1987 and is placed in the genus Cynopotamus, a group of small to moderately sized predatory characids within the family Characidae. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Cynopotamus juruenae Menezes, 1987. The principal reference for the taxonomy and synonymy of the genus is Oyakawa (1998), whose revision treated the species and clarified its boundaries within Cynopotamus.

The genus Cynopotamus is distinguished from other characids by its dentition — the name itself derives from the Greek kyon (dog), odous (teeth), and potamos (river), alluding to the dog-like, pointed teeth and riverine habits of the group. Within the genus, C. juruenae is known from a relatively restricted portion of the Tapajós drainage and has not been recorded outside the Juruena and Teles Pires systems.

Morphology

Cynopotamus juruenae reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in, making it a small species within the genus. Like other Cynopotamus, it is a slender-bodied, laterally compressed characid with the pointed, canine-like dentition that characterises the group and marks it as an active predator on smaller fish and invertebrates.

Detailed meristic and morphometric data for this species are not widely published outside the primary description and subsequent revisions. The benthopelagic lifestyle — living and feeding in the water column close to the substrate — is typical for Cynopotamus, whose fusiform body plan and tooth morphology suit ambush or pursuit feeding over the riverbed.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Brazil and is known only from the Tapajós basin in the state of Mato Grosso, specifically the Juruena and Teles Pires river drainages. These rivers flow through the southern arc of Amazonia, draining the Mato Grosso plateau and its transitional cerrado-forest margins before joining the Tapajós proper.

Cynopotamus juruenae inhabits permanent rivers and streams — classified by the IUCN as inland wetlands of the permanent river and stream type. Data on microhabitat preferences within these rivers are sparse, but the benthopelagic designation indicates an association with the water column near the substrate rather than the open midwater or surface. The Tapajós system encompasses highly diverse aquatic habitats, from fast-flowing, rock-strewn reaches to calmer backwaters, and the full range of habitats used by this species within the drainage has not been extensively documented.

Feeding

Cynopotamus juruenae is a predatory species. The canine dentition of Cynopotamus is adapted for seizing and holding small prey fish, and members of this genus are generally piscivorous or at least broadly carnivorous, taking small fish, aquatic insects, and other invertebrates.

Specific dietary data for C. juruenae in the wild are not recorded in the available literature. By analogy with other Cynopotamus species, it likely feeds primarily on small fish and aquatic invertebrates encountered near the substrate in its riverine habitat.

Mating

No published observations of mating behaviour specific to Cynopotamus juruenae exist in the available literature. Eggs are expected to be non-adhesive or weakly adhesive, scattered among vegetation or substrate, with no parental guarding — the standard mode for Cynopotamus and most characids.

In the aquarium

Cynopotamus juruenae is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially unknown in the hobby. As a small, predatory Amazonian characid it would require a species-appropriate setup: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the range typical of Tapajós basin tributaries, a temperature in the upper 20s Celsius, subdued lighting, and plenty of cover in the form of driftwood and leaf litter.

The predatory dentition and carnivorous habits mean that tankmates would need to be chosen carefully — fish of similar size or larger, and not so small as to be regarded as prey. Live and frozen meaty foods (small fish, earthworms, bloodworm) would be the dietary staple. The species is not currently available in the ornamental trade, so captive husbandry data are essentially absent.

Conservation

Cynopotamus juruenae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2022 based on a November 2018 evaluation. The LC categorisation is justified by the species' relatively wide distribution within the Tapajós basin, which spans both the Juruena and Teles Pires drainages in Mato Grosso, and by the absence of significant identified threats. Population trend is listed as unknown.

The Tapajós basin faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agriculture, and hydroelectric development in the broader Brazilian Amazon, and the long-term trajectory for species restricted to this region bears monitoring. However, as of the most recent IUCN assessment, no conservation measures are in place or considered necessary for this species, and it is not known to occur in any protected areas.
