Cynopotamus kincaidi was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1950. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong, California Academy of Sciences), is Cynopotamus kincaidi (Schultz, 1950); the parenthetical authority indicates the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Cynopotamus.
