Cynopotamus magdalenae is a slender, predatory characin from the Magdalena River drainage of Colombia, described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1879. A member of the subfamily Cynopotaminae, it belongs to a group of characids more closely aligned with large-toothed, piscivorous or invertebrate-feeding hunters than with the small, schooling tetras most aquarists associate with the family. The species is seldom encountered in the hobby and is known principally from museum collections and ichthyological surveys of Colombian river systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Cynopotamus magdalenae was described by Franz Steindachner in 1879, with the Magdalena River of Colombia as the type locality. The parenthetical authority notation indicates the species was originally placed in a different genus before transfer to Cynopotamus Valenciennes, 1850. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing reference for the valid name; the species has experienced little taxonomic instability within Cynopotamus since the genus was better delimited in revisionary work on Neotropical characids.

Cynopotamus is placed within the subfamily Cynopotaminae of the family Characidae — a group of medium-to-large, robustly-toothed characins distributed across South America east of the Andes. The genus is sometimes informally grouped with the so-called "dogfish characins" or predatory characids, reflecting dentition and body form more reminiscent of a generalised predator than of ornamental tetras. The Magdalena River drainage in Colombia represents the westernmost range of the genus among major South American river systems, isolated from the Orinoco and Amazon basins by the Andean cordilleras. Relatively few Cynopotamus species have been formally described, and the group may still harbour undescribed diversity in remote drainages.

Morphology

Like other members of Cynopotamus, C. magdalenae is an elongate, moderately compressed characin with a well-developed dentition suited to a predatory or opportunistic carnivorous diet. The body is torpedo-shaped rather than deep and disc-like, and the mouth is large relative to overall head size. Coloration in preserved specimens is typically silvery to brownish along the flanks, often with a faint lateral stripe or scattered melanophores producing a mottled appearance; live coloration may include more metallic or yellowish tones. Detailed morphometric data for C. magdalenae specifically are sparse in the accessible literature, and precise maximum size is not confirmed here.

The characteristic features that separate Cynopotamus species from one another — counts of scales along the lateral line, the number and form of dentary and premaxillary teeth, fin ray counts, and proportional measurements — require examination of museum vouchers or the primary description for reliable identification. In the field, any moderate-sized, silvery, large-mouthed characin from the middle or lower Magdalena is a candidate for this species, but several other characid genera overlap in the same drainage.

Habitat

Cynopotamus magdalenae is restricted to the Magdalena River system, one of Colombia's two great river basins descending the western slopes and inter-Andean valleys of the Andes. The Magdalena is a warm, turbid, lowland river for much of its course, with seasonal flooding that expands available habitat onto floodplains and into associated lakes (ciénagas) during the high-water season. Neotropical predatory characids of this type typically occupy the main channel and larger tributaries, often near submerged structure, undercut banks, or shallow vegetated margins.

Water conditions in the Magdalena lowlands are generally warm (mid-20s Celsius), with moderate to low clarity depending on discharge and season, and chemistry varying from slightly soft and acidic in some tributary headwaters to more neutral and moderately hard in the main channel. Specific habitat-preference data for C. magdalenae are not published in sources accessible to this survey; the above reflects what is broadly documented for the Magdalena ichthyofauna.

Feeding

Genus-level feeding ecology in Cynopotamus centres on animal prey. The large mouth, robust jaws, and conical-to-multicuspid teeth of the genus are consistent with a diet of smaller fish, large aquatic invertebrates, and possibly terrestrial insects or crustaceans taken near the water surface or along the margins. Several Cynopotamus species studied in other river systems have been confirmed as piscivorous or broadly carnivorous in gut-content analyses.

Specific dietary data for C. magdalenae from the Magdalena are not available in the literature reviewed here. By analogy with congeners and with the predatory characids of Neotropical lowland rivers generally, the species is inferred to be a carnivore taking fish and large invertebrates as primary prey items, with exact diet composition likely shifting with season, body size, and prey availability in the floodplain-and-main-channel environment it inhabits.

Mating

No published data on reproductive behaviour specific to Cynopotamus magdalenae are available. Across the family Characidae, open-water egg-scattering without parental care is the dominant reproductive mode, and most predatory characid species follow this pattern: adults scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation or in open water over substrate during peak spawning periods, with no parental guarding of eggs or fry.

For many large-river Neotropical characids, reproduction is tied to the annual flood cycle — rising waters trigger spawning migrations into flooded forest and floodplain environments where eggs and larvae benefit from abundant food and reduced predation pressure. Whether C. magdalenae follows a migratory or floodplain-spawning strategy in the Magdalena has not been documented in the sources available for this account.

Breeding

Cynopotamus magdalenae has not been reported in captive breeding in the accessible hobby literature. Given its rarity in the trade and limited availability of wild specimens outside Colombia, captive reproduction is essentially undocumented. Aquarists keeping large predatory characids of related groups typically report that these fish require spacious tanks, live or meaty frozen foods to achieve conditioning, and careful management of water quality and temperature cycling to stimulate spawning.

If ever attempted, breeding would likely follow the general egg-scattering, no-parental-care pattern of the family: conditioned adults would scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over a substrate, hatch times would fall within a few days at tropical temperatures, and fry would require appropriately sized live foods — infusoria or rotifers initially, graduating quickly to nauplii and small live invertebrates given the carnivorous character of the genus. These inferences are based on family- and genus-level patterns, not documented experience with this species.

In the aquarium

Cynopotamus magdalenae is essentially absent from the mainstream ornamental trade and would be encountered only by specialist collectors with access to Colombian aquarium exports or direct field-collecting contacts. Its predatory nature and moderate-to-large adult size place it squarely outside community-tank suitability — smaller fish would be at risk — and it would need a spacious aquarium with excellent filtration, regular water changes, and a diet of meaty foods to thrive in captivity.

Aquarists interested in predatory Neotropical characids are far more likely to encounter related genera such as Acestrorhynchus, Hoplias, or the pencilfishes than a species as obscure as C. magdalenae. Should a specimen become available, standard care for large carnivorous South American characids applies: generous tank dimensions, soft-to-neutral water chemistry in the mid-20s Celsius, dim-to-moderate lighting, and a diet cycling through whole small fish, prawn, mussel, and other meaty items. Data on precise care requirements for this species are not published.

Conservation

Cynopotamus magdalenae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the date of this article (June 2026). The species is therefore recorded as Not Evaluated (NE). The Magdalena River basin faces well-documented anthropogenic pressures — among the most intensively modified river systems in South America — including dam construction, intensive agriculture with resultant sedimentation and agrochemical runoff, urban and industrial pollution, and the introduction of non-native species. The Magdalena ichthyofauna is highly endemic and has been identified as one of the Neotropical basins most in need of targeted conservation assessment.

Without a formal IUCN evaluation, the conservation status of C. magdalenae specifically remains uncertain. The species' apparent rarity in collections and its restriction to a single, heavily impacted river system suggest it warrants attention in any future comprehensive assessment of Magdalena fishes. Its absence from the hobby trade means there is no captive safety net for the taxon.
