Taxonomy & naming
Cynopotamus xinguano was described by Naércio A. Menezes in 2007 in the journal Zootaxa (volume 1635, pages 55–61) as part of a revision that also provided a key to the species of the genus Cynopotamus. The type locality is the rio Culuene at approximately 13°49′S / 53°15′W, near Paranatinga, Mato Grosso, Brazil; the holotype is MZUSP 94009, a specimen of 4 in standard length. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Cynopotamus xinguano Menezes, 2007.
The genus Cynopotamus Valenciennes, 1849 belongs to the family Characidae and comprises a small group of predatory characins distributed across major South American river systems. Within the genus, C. xinguano is most similar to C. essequibensis, differing primarily in having a greater number of gill-rakers on the first arch (10–11 versus 8–9) and a wider humeral blotch, as well as differences in the muscle arrangement around the pseudotympanum.
The specific epithet xinguano refers to the rio Xingu basin, which is the species' known range, with the suffix following a standard convention for geographic adjectival epithets applied to Amazonian fishes. The species has no recorded common name in the trade or in regional vernacular literature.
Morphology
Cynopotamus xinguano reaches a maximum recorded total length of approximately 6 in, with the described size range in the original description spanning 3.5–7 in standard length. The body form is short and deep, consistent with the general body plan of the genus. The dorsal fin carries ii, 9 rays. The lateral line is notably long, with 91–125 perforated scales — a relatively high count that reflects the species' rather elongated lateral-line canal.
As in other members of Cynopotamus, the dentition is adapted for a predatory lifestyle: the jaws carry robust, conical to slightly compressed teeth suited to gripping prey. The humeral blotch — a dark pigment patch just behind the operculum — is wider in C. xinguano than in its closest relative C. essequibensis, and serves as a useful diagnostic character. Habitat
Cynopotamus xinguano is endemic to the middle and upper tributaries of the rio Xingu basin, with confirmed records from Mato Grosso and Pará states in Brazil. The type locality is the rio Culuene, a major headwater tributary of the Xingu arising on the cerrado plateau of central Mato Grosso. The species is classified as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish inhabiting tropical waters.
The rio Xingu system at these latitudes transitions between the cerrado-influenced headwaters and the more heavily forested middle reaches. Water chemistry in Xingu tributaries is typically warm and slightly acidic to near-neutral, with low to moderate conductivity reflecting the heavily weathered Precambrian shield geology of the region. Specific water-parameter records for C. xinguano in the wild are not documented in available sources, but the broader Xingu drainage supports a diverse ichthyofauna adapted to clear, warm waters with seasonal fluctuations in level and temperature.
Feeding
Cynopotamus xinguano is a predatory characin, as indicated by its jaw dentition and its placement in a genus known for piscivorous or invertivorous feeding habits. Members of the genus Cynopotamus are generally regarded as active predators taking smaller fish and aquatic invertebrates in midwater and near the substrate.
No detailed dietary studies specifically addressing C. xinguano have been published in available sources. By analogy with congeners and other mid-sized characid predators of the Xingu drainage, the diet likely encompasses small fish, crustaceans, and large invertebrates, with feeding activity probably concentrated in the lower-to-middle water column consistent with its benthopelagic classification.
Mating
No published observations of reproductive behaviour in Cynopotamus xinguano are available. Like the great majority of characids, it is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that settle among submerged vegetation or substrate debris.
Characids in the Xingu basin typically show seasonal reproductive activity tied to the flood cycle, with spawning often triggered by rising water levels, cooling temperatures, or increased flow associated with the onset of the wet season. Whether C. xinguano follows this pattern has not been documented in the literature accessible at the time of writing.
Breeding
Cynopotamus xinguano has not been bred in captivity in any documented account available in the sources consulted. The species is not currently established in the ornamental-fish trade and no hobbyist breeding records are known.
In general, mid-sized predatory characids from the Xingu drainage present significant challenges in captive breeding: they require large, well-filtered aquaria, live or freshly killed food to condition, and appropriate seasonal cues (temperature and photoperiod shifts mimicking the Amazonian wet-dry cycle) to induce spawning. Eggs would be expected to be non-adhesive or weakly adhesive, scattered over the substrate or among plants, with no parental care and adults liable to consume both eggs and fry if not separated promptly.
In the aquarium
Cynopotamus xinguano is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. Data on captive husbandry are sparse. As a predatory mid-sized characin reaching around 6 in total length, it would require a spacious aquarium — a tank of at least 59 in in length — with robust filtration, warm water in the tropical range, and a diet of meaty foods including whole feeder fish, prawns, and earthworms.
Its restricted range and limited trade presence mean that specimens would most likely be wild-caught, making import subject to Brazilian export regulations. Keepers with experience maintaining predatory Amazonian characids (such as other Cynopotamus or allied genera) would be best placed to attempt its maintenance. Any future captive-care notes would need to be sourced from specialist ichthyology collections rather than the general hobby.
Conservation
Cynopotamus xinguano is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022. The assessment was carried out by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). No significant threats to the species have been identified, and no conservation programmes specifically targeting it are in place; it has not been recorded in protected areas.
Although the species is endemic to the rio Xingu basin — a river system under considerable pressure from the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex and associated infrastructure development in Pará — the population trend is recorded as unknown. The middle and upper Xingu tributaries in Mato Grosso, including the rio Culuene, are somewhat upstream of the most severe direct impoundment impacts, though habitat degradation from agriculture and deforestation in the cerrado headwaters remains an ongoing concern for the broader ichthyofauna of the system.
