Originally placed in the broad catch-all genus Astyanax, it was subsequently reassigned to Deuterodon — a genus whose name references a distinctive dentition — where it sits among a cohort of small tetras endemic to the coastal river basins of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The species occupies clear, running streams with rocky and sandy substrates at modest elevations in the Mata Atlântica, feeding on algae and organic material and assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Deuterodon burgerai was originally described as Astyanax burgerai by Zanata and Camelier in 2009, with the type locality recorded as the Rio Almada system in Bahia State, Brazil, at an altitude of approximately 696 ft. The species was later transferred to the genus Deuterodon, reflecting phylogenetic revisions that have progressively dismantled the paraphyletic Astyanax aggregate — a process that has involved reassigning dozens of coastal Brazilian characids over the past two decades.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name Deuterodon burgerai (Zanata & Camelier, 2009); the parenthetical authority indicates the species was not originally described in Deuterodon. Phylogeographic studies of Deuterodon have confirmed that the genus is distributed across southeastern and northeastern coastal river basins of Brazil, with species tending toward restricted, drainage-level endemism — a pattern consistent with the biogeographic history of the Atlantic Forest hydrological network.

Morphology

Deuterodon burgerai is a small, slender-bodied characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. Habitat

This positions it within the submontane reaches of the Atlantic Forest, a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot.

The Atlantic Forest rivers of southern Bahia are characterised by relatively clear, low-conductivity waters draining ancient crystalline rock. The region sits within the Atlantic Forest ecoregion, which harbours a disproportionately high diversity of endemic freshwater fishes. Deuterodon burgerai is among the many small characids with ranges tied to a single drainage or cluster of adjacent drainages within this system, a consequence of the limited connectivity between adjacent coastal river basins.

Feeding

No published observations of spawning behaviour in Deuterodon burgerai are known from the literature. Breeding

Captive breeding of Deuterodon burgerai has not been documented in the accessible hobby or scientific literature, and no specific protocols exist for the species. By analogy with small characids of similar size and ecology — egg-scattering tetras from clear, oxygen-rich Atlantic Forest streams — conditions likely to stimulate spawning would include soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water, temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, and the introduction of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as egg-deposition sites.

As with most narrowly endemic Atlantic Forest characids, any trade specimens would most likely be wild-collected, and sourcing captive-bred individuals should be a priority if the species ever enters regular availability.

The Least Concern rating does not indicate that the species faces no threat; rather, it reflects that the population is not currently considered to meet the thresholds for a threatened category under available data.

The species is endemic to the Rio Almada drainage in Bahia State, within the Atlantic Forest biome — one of the most deforested and threatened biomes on Earth, having lost over 85% of its original cover. Small-stream characids in this region face ongoing pressure from land-use change, catchment deforestation, agricultural runoff, and water abstraction. The Atlantic Forest's endemic freshwater fish fauna is considered highly vulnerable at a regional level even where individual species remain formally Least Concern, as population sizes are inherently limited by the restricted ranges that characterise drainage-endemic species.
