Deuterodon hastatus was described by the American ichthyologist George Sprague Myers in 1928. The parenthetical authority indicates that Myers originally placed the species in a genus other than Deuterodon; subsequent systematic revision transferred it to Deuterodon, where it is currently recognised as a valid species under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the governing authority for valid names used throughout this atlas).
Deuterodon is a South American characid genus within the diverse family Characidae. The genus has historically been difficult to define cleanly, sharing the family's broad radiation across tropical and subtropical South American drainages. Revisionary work on Brazilian Characidae has periodically reorganised its membership, and the placement of individual species can shift as molecular and morphological studies accumulate. D. hastatus sits in this fluid context — a valid name with a clear original description but limited subsequent study.
Morphology
Deuterodon hastatus is a small, laterally compressed characin typical of the genus, reaching approximately 2.5–3 in standard length in adults. The body is fusiform and moderately slender, with the streamlined profile common to open-water schooling tetras. A small adipose fin is present between the dorsal and caudal fins, as in all characins.
Colouration is modest: a silvery to lightly bronze background, typically with a lateral stripe or diffuse band running from the caudal peduncle toward the head, and a small caudal spot or marking at the base of the tail. These markings follow the general pattern seen across many small South American tetras and are not strongly diagnostic without close examination. Habitat
Deuterodon hastatus is native to Brazil, occurring in South American lowland river drainages typical of the genus. Feeding
Deuterodon hastatus is an omnivore in the broad sense typical of small South American characins, feeding on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, micro-crustaceans, insect larvae, and organic particulate matter in the water column and near the substrate. The species is a mid-water to surface feeder, capitalising on drift and surface-fallen prey as well as benthic invertebrates.
In the aquarium, individuals accept a wide variety of prepared and live foods without difficulty. High-quality micro-pellets and small flakes form an adequate staple; supplementation with frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro-worms improves condition and colouration and more closely mirrors the natural diet. Small, frequent feedings suit the species better than a single large ration.
Mating
Like virtually all small South American characins, Deuterodon hastatus is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Males court females with lateral displays and fin-spreading, driving them toward fine-leaved plants, submerged vegetation, or open spawning areas where eggs are broadcast freely into the water column or among vegetation.
Spawning activity is typically triggered by water changes mimicking rainfall events, slight temperature increases, and the presence of fine-leaved plant material or spawning mops. Males may chase females actively in the lead-up to spawning, and in a group setting multiple males may compete to spawn with a single female. No pair bonding or territorial guarding has been reported for the genus.
Breeding
Deuterodon hastatus spawns adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with eggs settling to the bottom or clinging briefly to vegetation after release. Clutch size is typical of small characins — potentially several dozen to a few hundred eggs per spawning event depending on the female's condition and size. Incubation at tropical temperatures is brief, generally in the range of 24–36 hours, with free-swimming fry emerging within a few days.
Adults show no parental care and will consume eggs and fry if left in the spawning tank; removal of adults or transfer of eggs to a rearing vessel is standard practice. Fry are tiny at hatching and require infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry foods initially before transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered dry food. In the aquarium
Deuterodon hastatus is an undemanding, peaceful small tetra well suited to a community aquarium with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Like most schooling characins it should be kept in groups of six or more individuals, which reduces stress, encourages natural behaviour, and produces more confident, visible fish. A planted aquarium with subdued lighting, soft acidic to neutral water, and dark substrate shows small silver tetras to their best advantage.
Water parameters should reflect the species' lowland South American origins: temperature in the range of 72–82 °F, pH 5.5–7.5, and low to moderate hardness. The species is not demanding about water hardness provided extremes are avoided, and stable, well-oxygenated conditions are more important than precise chemistry. Given its small size, tankmates should be selected carefully to avoid both predation and competition — small rasboras, other tetras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, and small corydoras are natural choices. The species is not commonly available in the trade under its own name and is more likely encountered through specialist importers or breeders working with South American Characidae.
Conservation
Deuterodon hastatus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE). This is not unusual for small, taxonomically complex South American characins: the breadth of the family and the limited survey effort in many Brazilian drainages mean that a large proportion of species lack formal risk assessments, even where populations may be locally restricted or subject to habitat pressure.
The primary threats facing Brazilian freshwater fish broadly — deforestation, riparian degradation, agricultural runoff, and water extraction — are relevant context for the species even without a species-specific assessment. Targeted surveys and population studies would be necessary to characterise the actual conservation situation for D. hastatus. Aquarists interested in the species are encouraged to source tank-bred specimens where possible and to note locality and provenance data, which can contribute to the distributional records that inform future assessments.
