Deuterodon giton is a small characid from the Atlantic coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil, occurring in the Paraíba do Sul River basin and in coastal streams of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro states. Originally described as Astyanax giton by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908 from the Rio Paraíba do Sul, it was later transferred to the genus Deuterodon — a lineage of southeastern Brazilian tetras placed in the subfamily Stethaprioninae. Reaching roughly 4.5 in in total length, it is a slender, silver-sided fish representative of the species-rich tetra assemblages that characterize Brazil's Atlantic Forest river systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Deuterodon giton was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908 under the name Astyanax giton, with the type locality given as the Rio Paraíba do Sul (then written 'Rio Parahyba') in Brazil. The species was subsequently reassigned to Deuterodon, a genus restricted to the Atlantic drainages of southeastern Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognizes the valid name as Deuterodon giton (Eigenmann, 1908); the parenthetical authority reflects the generic transfer from Astyanax.

Deuterodon belongs to the subfamily Stethaprioninae within Characidae, a placement supported by molecular phylogenetic work on southeastern Brazilian characins. Phylogeographic studies have used D. giton as a reference taxon for the coastal Atlantic Forest region, where the genus occupies a range of small river systems. The genus name Deuterodon (meaning 'second tooth' in Greek, referencing dental characteristics of the group) distinguishes these fishes from the morphologically similar but more broadly distributed Astyanax complex.

Morphology

Deuterodon giton is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed characid reaching approximately 4.5 in in total length according to FishBase records. Like most members of Deuterodon and related stethaprionine genera, it has the typical tetra body plan: a silvery, fusiform body with the lateral line running along the mid-flank, a forked caudal fin, and an adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins.

The coloration is predominantly silver with darker pigmentation along the dorsal surface and a darker mid-lateral stripe that extends toward the caudal peduncle. Habitat

Mating

Like most small characids, Deuterodon giton is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care — the general reproductive mode of the Characidae. Males likely court females with pursuit displays, and spawning in the wild probably occurs over submerged vegetation or among fine-leaved aquatic plants in shallow areas of streams and river margins.

The species has been documented in association with the Brazilian aquarium trade (it is native to a region with an active ornamental fishery), suggesting some familiarity with its behavior under captive conditions.
