Deuterodon iguape is a small Brazilian characin described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907 from the Iguape River system of São Paulo state. Endemic to that single Atlantic-slope drainage, it is among the many modestly sized, poorly known tetras that populate the coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil — important ecologically in their native streams yet virtually absent from both the scientific literature and the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Deuterodon iguape was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907, with the type locality given as the Iguape River in São Paulo state, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Deuterodon iguape Eigenmann, 1907; the authority is unparenthesised because the species was described directly in the genus Deuterodon, where it remains.

Deuterodon is a genus of small characids endemic to the Atlantic Forest drainages of southeastern Brazil. The group sits within the large, diverse family Characidae and is distinguished by a combination of meristic and morphological characters, though the boundaries of Deuterodon relative to allied genera such as Hyphessobrycon and Astyanax have shifted as molecular and morphological revisions have worked through this extraordinarily species-rich assemblage. D. iguape has received little individual attention in the literature and is primarily known from its original description and regional faunal surveys.

The specific epithet iguape is a toponym referencing the Iguape River, the Atlantic-slope coastal drainage in southern São Paulo state where the type was collected. No common name has been established in the English-language hobby or scientific literature.

Morphology

Deuterodon iguape is a small tetra, with adults estimated at roughly 1 in standard length based on the size range typical of the genus and the cache notes from the original description literature. Habitat

Water in these rivers tends to be soft, slightly acidic, and low in dissolved solids, reflecting the granitic and metamorphic geology of the Serra do Mar. Feeding

In related Atlantic Forest characids, incubation times at ambient stream temperatures (typically 64–75 °F in cooler upland reaches) range from roughly 24–48 hours, with larvae becoming free-swimming within a few days. First foods in comparable species are microscopic — infusoria and rotifers — before the fry grow large enough to accept newly hatched brine shrimp. These details are extrapolated from genus and subfamily patterns, not from direct records of D. iguape breeding.

In the aquarium

Deuterodon iguape is not available in the ornamental fish trade and is not kept in the hobby. It is essentially unknown outside its native range and the specialist ichthyological literature. No aquarium-keeping guidance exists in the published or hobbyist record for this species.

As a small, likely peaceful schooling characid from cool, soft, and slightly acidic Atlantic Forest streams, it would theoretically suit a biotope aquarium replicating its native habitat — subdued lighting, a dark sandy substrate, tannin-stained water, and tankmates drawn from the same drainage. Water parameters reflecting the Iguape system (soft, pH 5.5–7.0, 64–75 °F) would be appropriate. However, these recommendations are entirely inferential; this species should be regarded as a scientific curiosity rather than an aquarium subject.

Deuterodon iguape has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no global conservation status (Not Evaluated).
