Taxonomy & naming
Deuterodon heterostomus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1911 in a report on new characins in the collection of the Carnegie Museum, based on specimens collected at Campos in the Rio Paraíba do Sul drainage of southeastern Brazil. Eigenmann placed it in the genus Probolodus, and the holotype (FMNH 54328) and paratypes (FMNH 54329–30) are held at the Field Museum of Natural History.
The species was subsequently transferred to Deuterodon, a genus of South American characids with their centre of diversity in Atlantic coastal rivers of Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Deuterodon heterostomus (Eigenmann, 1911), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original placement in a different genus. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name. The original description was published in Annals of the Carnegie Museum, volume 8, number 1 (1911), pages 164–181.
Morphology
Deuterodon heterostomus is a small, slender characid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3 in SL for males and unsexed specimens, and 4 in SL for females — making females notably larger than males at maximum size, a degree of sexual size dimorphism that is uncommon among characids of comparable body form.
The species belongs to a suite of scale-eating (lepidophagous) characids whose dentition is adapted for removing scales from the flanks of prey fish. The specific epithet heterostomus (from Greek, meaning 'different mouth') alludes to the distinctive oral morphology associated with this trophic guild. Detailed meristic and osteological data are sparse in the available hobbyist and aggregator literature; the original Eigenmann description and subsequent systematic revisions are the primary sources for morphological characters.
Habitat
Deuterodon heterostomus is a freshwater fish endemic to the coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil. The type locality is Campos, within the Rio Paraíba do Sul basin, and IUCN documentation confirms the species is widespread across its range in the southeastern Brazilian coastal river systems, spanning the Rio Paraíba do Sul and other Atlantic coastal drainages.
FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic in tropical streams and rivers with sandy to muddy substrates. It inhabits the freshwater zone, with no marine or brackish component to its range. Feeding
The most ecologically distinctive aspect of Deuterodon heterostomus is its diet. FishBase records scale-eating from other tetras — particularly members of the genus Astyanax — as its primary feeding mode. Lepidophagy (scale-eating) is a specialised and relatively rare trophic strategy among freshwater fish globally, and within the Characidae it has evolved independently in several lineages.
Scale-eaters typically approach prey from behind or from the side, executing a rapid strike to dislodge a mouthful of scales before the prey can react. The scale-eating habit complicates group husbandry, as individuals may attack tank mates. Any prospective breeding attempt would need to account for this behaviour, likely conditioning fish individually or in small, carefully monitored groups. Incubation times and fry requirements have not been published for this species in the sources available.
In the aquarium
Deuterodon heterostomus is essentially unknown in the hobby. It does not appear in the ornamental fish trade literature, and no dedicated care guides or keeper accounts are on record. Its specialised scale-eating diet poses a significant challenge for aquarium keeping: housing it with the Astyanax tetras that form its primary prey would result in chronic injury to tank mates, while feeding it in isolation would require either live fish prey or extensive conditioning to accept alternatives.
Water parameters matching those of its natural range — warm, tropical freshwater in the mid-20s Celsius, soft to moderately hard with a near-neutral to slightly acidic pH reflecting the Atlantic Forest coastal rivers — would be a reasonable starting point. The species' primary interest to aquarists is biological and ichthyological rather than ornamental: it represents an unusual example of lepidophagy within the diverse and widely kept tetra assemblage.
Conservation
Deuterodon heterostomus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded in 2022 under the former name Probolodus heterostomus. The Least Concern rating reflects the species' relatively wide distribution across southeastern Brazilian coastal drainages, including the Rio Paraíba do Sul system and other Atlantic slope rivers, where populations are considered stable enough to preclude a threatened category under current criteria.
Despite the Least Concern status, the Atlantic Forest biome — the backdrop to this species' entire range — is one of the most heavily deforested and fragmented biodiversity hotspots on Earth. Coastal river systems in southeastern Brazil face ongoing pressures from agricultural runoff, water abstraction, urban expansion, and catchment degradation. These threats do not currently appear to be driving population-level declines in D. heterostomus, but they form the environmental context within which any future reassessment would need to be interpreted.
