Diapoma uruguayense was originally described as Hyphessobrycon melanopleurus uruguayensis by Messner in 1962, with the type locality given as the Rio Uruguai (Uruguay River) in Brazil. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Diapoma, where it is currently placed as a full species, Diapoma uruguayense (Messner, 1962), with parenthetical authorship reflecting that transfer.
