The bucktooth tetra, Exodon paradoxus, is a paradox in miniature: a fish of dazzling silver-and-red beauty whose preferred diet in the wild runs to the scales and flesh of other fishes. Native to the Amazon and Tocantins river basins and coastal rivers of Guyana, it is the sole species in its genus — a monotypic predator that has made a devoted following in the aquarium hobby precisely because of how difficult it is to keep well. Few tetras demand as much thought about tankmates, and few reward careful aquarists with a more spectacular shoaling display.

Taxonomy & naming

Exodon paradoxus was described by the German naturalists Johannes Müller and Franz Hermann Troschel in 1844. The genus name Exodon refers to the teeth — from Greek exo (outside) and odon (tooth) — alluding to the conspicuous, outward-projecting dentition that gives the fish its predatory edge. The specific epithet paradoxus reflects the apparent contradiction of such an aggressive predator clothed in such vivid ornamental colours.

The species is the sole member of its genus, making Exodon a monotypic lineage within the diverse family Characidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Exodon paradoxus Müller & Troschel, 1844. No synonyms are in current use and the name has remained stable since its original description.

Morphology

Exodon paradoxus is a slender, compressed characin reaching up to 6 in standard length in wild specimens, though aquarium-kept individuals typically top out around 4 in. The body is silvery with a strong iridescent sheen, and two bold black spots — one below the dorsal fin and one at the base of the caudal peduncle — stand out sharply against the flanks. The fins are flushed with red and yellow, giving the fish an arresting combination of metallic silver, black, and warm colour.

The teeth are the defining structural feature. Large, recurved, and projecting conspicuously, they are well suited to rasping scales from other fishes — the behaviour that gives the species its common name. The mouth is upturned, aiding in strikes from below against fish swimming overhead. The body form is muscular and fast-moving, consistent with an active pursuit predator.

Habitat

Exodon paradoxus occurs across the Amazon River basin, the Tocantins River basin, and rivers draining into the Atlantic coast of Guyana. Seriously Fish notes that the species is typically found in flowing waters over sandy substrates in savannah grassland (cerrado) environments — open, sunlit rivers and streams rather than shaded forest creeks.

Water conditions in these habitats are warm and generally soft to moderately hard and acidic. The species tolerates a broad range of water chemistry: temperatures of 73–82 °F, pH from around 5.5 to 7.5, and hardness from very soft to around 20 °dH. The sandy, open-water habitats it prefers in the wild translate well to aquarium conditions that emphasise flow and open swimming space.

Feeding

In the wild, Exodon paradoxus is a scale-stripping specialist — a feeding strategy that places it in the same functional guild as the piranha despite being a far smaller fish. Individuals dart at other fishes and scrape scales from their flanks, sometimes working in coordinated groups. Insects and other invertebrates also feature in the diet, but scale-eating is the behaviour that most shapes its interactions with other species.

In the aquarium, the species will accept a wide variety of meaty foods: bloodworm, prawns, earthworms, and similar frozen and live offerings. Commercial carnivore pellets and some flake foods are taken, but a diet with a strong live or frozen protein component keeps the fish in best condition and colour. The predatory drive remains strong in captivity — any tankmate small enough to be attacked will be.

Mating

Exodon paradoxus is an egg-scattering open spawner in the characin tradition. No elaborate courtship or pair bonding is reported; like many tetras, males likely chase females through the water column, with spawning occurring among fine-leaved vegetation. Adults provide no parental care, and both eggs and fry are at risk from the adults themselves.

Breeding in captivity is rarely achieved, partly because maintaining a group of bucktooth tetras in good condition — which is a prerequisite for spawning — is itself a challenge. Seriously Fish notes that captive spawning is uncommon, and dedicated efforts by breeders, rather than accidental spawning in community tanks, account for most reported successes.

Breeding

When spawning does occur, the eggs are small and adhesive, scattered among fine-leaved plants or substrate and left entirely without parental attention. Incubation times and fry development data for this species are sparse in the published hobbyist literature, reflecting how infrequently captive breeding is achieved.

Breeders who have succeeded generally isolate a well-conditioned group, provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and remove eggs or adults promptly to prevent predation. Fry are tiny at hatching and require infusoria or similar microscopic first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the scarcity of detailed accounts, aquarists attempting to breed the species should treat standard egg-scattering characin protocols as a starting baseline and adapt from there.

In the aquarium

The bucktooth tetra is a specialist fish, and keeping it well requires understanding its aggression clearly from the outset. The species must be kept in a large, tightly packed shoal — typically a dozen or more individuals — because in smaller numbers the fish direct their scale-stripping attacks onto one another with fatal results. A large group dilutes aggression across many individuals, and the spectacular schooling behaviour of a healthy shoal is the payoff.

Tankmates are the central problem. Virtually any other fish species kept with bucktooth tetras risks being attacked: slow-moving or long-finned fish are targeted first, but even robust species suffer. The safest approach, and the one most experienced keepers recommend, is to maintain a species-only tank. Water conditions should reflect the species' wild range: 73–82 °F, pH 5.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water, and good filtration with meaningful flow. A spacious tank of at least 47 in — longer is better — suits an adult shoal. The fish are hardy and not otherwise demanding, but the combination of species-only husbandry and the need for a large group makes them an intermediate-to-advanced choice.

Conservation

Exodon paradoxus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment in 2023. The species has a broad distribution across the Amazon and Tocantins basins and Guyana, and no range-wide population pressures have been identified that would threaten it at the species level.

It is collected for both commercial fisheries and the ornamental trade, but these pressures do not appear to have reduced populations significantly across the species' wide range. The cerrado and Amazonian habitats it favours face broader threats from deforestation and agricultural conversion, but for now the bucktooth tetra remains a fish of stable, Least Concern status across its South American range.
