A slender characid of South American river basins, Astyanax gracilior was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908 from type specimens collected at Obidos and Villa Bella in Brazil. It belongs to one of the most species-rich genera in the family Characidae, a group so diverse that the limits of Astyanax itself have been debated for well over a century. The species is seldom encountered in the aquarium trade but illustrates the rich and still-being-mapped diversity of small characins in Amazonian and adjacent drainages.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax gracilior was formally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908 in his landmark monograph on the American Characidae. The type locality is recorded as Obidos and Villa Bella, Brazil, with syntypes deposited at the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ 20716, 1.5 in). The valid name as governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Astyanax gracilior Eigenmann, 1908.

The species has been associated with the rio Tocantins basin in Brazilian ichthyological literature. Astyanax is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the Characidae, with well over 100 nominal species recognised across Central and South America. Generic boundaries have shifted repeatedly as phylogenetic work has progressed, and a number of species formerly placed in Astyanax have been moved to allied genera; A. gracilior itself remains in Astyanax pending further revisionary work on the group.

The epithet gracilior is a Latin comparative adjective meaning "more slender" or "slenderer," derived from gracilis (thin, slender). The allusion most likely refers to a body form more slender than a presumed congener known to Eigenmann at the time of description.

Morphology

Astyanax gracilior is a small, laterally compressed characid with the fusiform body plan typical of the genus. Eigenmann's type specimen measured 1.5 in standard length, consistent with the modest size of many Astyanax species in lowland drainages. The name gracilior signals a comparatively slender body relative to near relatives, though detailed meristic and morphometric data from the original description would be required to characterise proportions precisely.

Like most Astyanax, the species likely carries a single small adipose fin behind the dorsal, a forked caudal fin, and a full lateral line. The genus typically shows a dark humeral spot and a dark caudal peduncle marking, though the expression and distinctness of these marks varies considerably among species and populations. Detailed colour notes from wild-caught specimens are sparse in the available literature for this species specifically.

Habitat

The type locality places Astyanax gracilior in the lower Amazon region of Brazil, at Obidos on the main Amazon channel and Villa Bella. Distribution records in the broader literature extend to Peru and Colombia as well as Brazil, suggesting the species may range across parts of the western and central Amazon basin. Available data do not specify a single drainage with certainty beyond the Brazilian type localities and the Tocantins basin association noted in checklist literature.

The information gap reflects how many small Astyanax species exist primarily as museum specimens and checklist entries rather than living study animals.

For hobbyists who do encounter it, the genus's standard care parameters apply: warm tropical water in the mid-20s Celsius, neutral to slightly acidic conditions reflecting Amazonian chemistry, a roomy well-planted tank, and a school of at least six individuals to permit natural shoaling behaviour. Peaceful, similarly sized tankmates are suitable. The species' slender build and modest size would make it a good candidate for a biotope aquarium themed on the Amazonian lowland fauna.

Conservation

Astyanax gracilior has not received a formal assessment on the IUCN Red List as of the date of this article; no dedicated assessment was located through current searches of Red List records. FishBase records the species as occurring across Brazil, Peru, and Colombia, which, if confirmed, would imply a relatively broad distribution — a factor generally associated with lower extinction risk in freshwater fishes.

The genus Astyanax includes numerous species of restricted range alongside wide-ranging ones, and the taxonomic uncertainty surrounding many Astyanax lineages means that what appear to be broadly distributed species may conceal cryptic taxa of narrower range once revisionary work clarifies species limits. Continued survey work and taxonomic revision are the most important contributions to understanding the conservation situation of A. gracilior and its allies.
