Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax bimaculatus was originally described by Linnaeus in 1758 under the name Salmo bimaculatus, with the type locality given simply as 'America Meridionali' — South America. The parenthetical authority in the current binomial reflects that the species was later moved from Linnaeus's original genus to Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854, where Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records it as the valid name. Historical synonymy includes Tetragonopterus maculatus.
Astyanax is one of the largest genera in the family Characidae, with well over 150 described species ranging from the Rio Grande in North America through virtually all of South America east of the Andes. A. bimaculatus has long been used as a reference species in ichthyological work on the group, and its near-identical appearance to several close relatives means the name has sometimes been applied to what are now recognised as distinct species; museum vouchers and geographic provenance matter when reviewing older literature.
Morphology
A. bimaculatus reaches up to 7 in total length, making it one of the larger representatives of its immediate group, though most individuals encountered in the wild and in the aquarium trade are considerably smaller. The body plan is the classic characin template: moderately deep, laterally compressed, with a forked tail and a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal. Coloration is essentially silvery, often with a faint yellowish or brassy suffusion on the flanks, and the fins are largely clear to lightly pigmented.
The two spots that name the species are its most distinctive external marks: a dark humeral blotch on the shoulder, positioned just behind the operculum, and a second black spot at the base of the caudal fin on the caudal peduncle. Both are present from juvenile stages onward. Sexual dimorphism is modest; females are noticeably fuller in the belly when gravid, and males may show fine hooks on the anal-fin rays (a character common to many astyanacine characins), but the sexes are not strikingly different outside of breeding condition.
Habitat
Few South American freshwater fishes tolerate as broad a range of habitats as A. bimaculatus. It is recorded from swiftly flowing rivers and clear rocky streams through slow lowland rivers, backwaters, ponds, artificial reservoirs, roadside ditches, and temporarily flooded areas. This ecological breadth underlies its enormous distribution across much of tropical and subtropical South America, including Brazil and many surrounding countries.
The species displays significant seasonal variation in the water conditions it occupies, tracking flood-pulse cycles that reshape the chemistry and temperature of lowland neotropical systems through the year. It is generally found in warmer lowland waters, tolerating the full range of turbidity states that characterise the rivers it inhabits. This flexibility — rather than specialisation for any particular water chemistry or habitat type — is the ecological trait that most defines the species.
Feeding
Astyanax bimaculatus is an opportunistic omnivore. FishBase records the natural diet as encompassing zooplankton, detritus, higher plant material, and occasionally fish scales — a dietary breadth that matches the species' generalist habitat use. It feeds actively throughout the water column, responding to whatever forage is most abundant seasonally.
In the aquarium it is similarly undemanding: it accepts high-quality dry foods (flake, small granules, pellets), frozen and live invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, and will graze on soft plant tissue. A varied diet helps maintain condition and colour. As a schooling fish it competes actively at feeding time, so care is warranted when housing it with slower or more timid species.
Mating
Reproduction in A. bimaculatus is tied to the annual hydrological cycle. Research indicates that gametogenesis — the maturation of eggs and sperm — occurs during the dry season, so that the fish are primed to spawn when rising waters mark the onset of the rainy season. This seasonal synchrony is a widespread trait among small characins that use the flood pulse as a reproductive cue, ensuring that larvae hatch into the productive, flood-enriched shallow waters where survival is highest.
Courtship behaviour is not elaborate. Males pursue ripe females, and spawning is a scatter-and-flee affair: eggs and sperm are released in open water or among vegetation, and neither parent takes any interest in the fertilised eggs afterward. In captivity, well-conditioned groups will spawn with little prompting when water conditions shift slightly — a modest temperature increase or water change is often sufficient.
Breeding
Astyanax bimaculatus is an egg-scattering open-water spawner. Eggs are small, non-adhesive to slightly adhesive, and scattered among fine-leaved plants or over a suitable substrate; the adults show no parental care and will consume their own spawn if given the opportunity. Breeders typically condition a group with protein-rich live and frozen foods, then transfer spawning adults to a separate, heavily planted or mop-equipped breeding tank.
After spawning the adults should be removed. Eggs hatch within roughly 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and the fry are free-swimming a day or two later. First foods are infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. Growth is reasonably fast under good conditions, and young fish begin to show their adult spot markings early.
In the aquarium
A. bimaculatus is a standard community-tank characin: active, hardy, tolerant of a wide range of conditions, and peaceful toward tankmates of similar or larger size. Its broad habitat tolerance translates into aquarium flexibility — it is not demanding about water chemistry within the warm, tropical range and recovers well from minor husbandry lapses, which accounts for its popularity as a beginner fish.
It should be kept in a school of six or more to bring out natural behaviour and reduce skittishness. A tank of moderate length with open swimming space suits it; heavy planting is not required but provides cover and makes the fish bolder. Tankmates can include other peaceful medium-sized characins, corydoras, and similarly tempered community fish. Because adults can reach close to 7 in TL, the tank should be sized accordingly for a long-term group — a tank short enough to house juvenile specimens may become crowded as the fish mature. The species is not suitable for very small nano setups at adult size.
Conservation
Astyanax bimaculatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The assessment reflects the species' vast range across South American freshwater systems, its high abundance in many parts of that range, and its demonstrated tolerance of degraded and altered habitats — including reservoirs, irrigation channels, and urban waterways — that would eliminate more specialised species.
While this resilience means the species itself faces no immediate threat of extinction, it should not be read as evidence that South American freshwater biodiversity is in good shape more broadly. Many waters that A. bimaculatus inhabits are under pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, dam construction, and introduced species. The species' own success in modified landscapes sometimes comes at the expense of specialist endemics that share those waters. Aquarium specimens are overwhelmingly captive-bred or commercially farmed; wild collection for the hobby is not a conservation concern for this abundant species.
