Taxonomy & naming

Gephyrocharax atracaudatus was originally described as Deuterodon atracaudata by Meek and Hildebrand in 1912, from specimens collected in the Río Frijoles of the former Canal Zone, Panama. The species was later transferred to the genus Gephyrocharax Eigenmann, 1912, where it now resides as the valid name G. atracaudatus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names used here, records the combination as Gephyrocharax atracaudatus (Meek & Hildebrand, 1912), with parenthetical authority because the species was moved from its original genus.

The genus Gephyrocharax is placed within the subfamily Stevardiinae of the family Characidae. A comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus confirmed the validity of G. atracaudatus and expanded its known distribution to include the Palenque River basin and the Pearl Islands (Archipiélago de las Perlas) in the Gulf of Panama, extending the species' range beyond the Canal Zone type locality. The Stevardiinae as a whole form a distinctive lineage within the Characidae, notably including taxa that practice internal insemination.
