Gephyrocharax chaparae was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1940 on the basis of material from the Chapare River in Bolivia. The genus Gephyrocharax is placed within the family Characidae — a vast and paraphyletic assemblage that encompasses the majority of South American characiform fishes — and within it occupies a lineage sometimes affiliated with the subfamily Stevardiinae, a group of livebearing-adjacent characids that has been subject to ongoing molecular reassessment. Whatever internal rearrangements future revisions bring, the valid name as governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes remains Gephyrocharax chaparae Fowler, 1940.
The genus name Gephyrocharax combines the Greek géphyra (bridge) with charax (a pointed stake, the root of Characidae), a reference variously interpreted as describing the fish's bridging of morphological gaps within the family or as a structural allusion. The specific epithet chaparae is a toponym derived from the Chapare River, the type locality in Bolivia's Cochabamba department — the river's name itself traces to Chapare province, a region of the upper Mamoré drainage in the western Amazonian foothills.
No recognised subspecies or locality variants are formally described for G. chaparae. The species is the only member of the genus formally recorded from the Bolivian Chapare drainage.
Morphology
Gephyrocharax chaparae is a small, elongate characid with the slender, streamlined body plan typical of the genus. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2 in, based on male or unsexed material; this makes it one of the smaller members of the genus. The body is laterally compressed and relatively low-profiled, giving the fish a torpedo-like silhouette suited to life in moving water.
Detailed published meristic and colour data for this species are sparse, but members of Gephyrocharax generally share a translucent to silvery body with a conspicuous dark lateral stripe running from just behind the operculum to the base of the caudal fin, and a characteristic intensification of pigment at the caudal peduncle. Habitat
Gephyrocharax chaparae is known from the Chapare River basin in Cochabamba department, Bolivia, a tributary of the Mamoré River and thus part of the upper Madeira drainage of the western Amazon. This system descends from the Andean foothills across a transitional zone between montane and lowland Amazonian environments, with forested riparian margins and seasonally variable hydrology driven by Andean precipitation cycles.
FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, occupying the lower water column and near-substrate zone of freshwater rivers and streams. The reported temperature range for the species is 68–75 °F, consistent with the cooler, higher-elevation rivers of the Bolivian Amazon foothills rather than the warmer lowland mainstem. By inference from congeners and from the trophic level estimate, the species likely feeds opportunistically in the water column and near the substrate on insects, microcrustaceans, and organic matter. In an aquarium setting, small Gephyrocharax respond well to a varied diet of fine-grade prepared foods supplemented with live or frozen Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and similar small-bodied invertebrates.
Mating
No published description of courtship behaviour specific to Gephyrocharax chaparae exists in the accessible literature. Based on reproductive biology documented for related Gephyrocharax species and small characids of the broader Stevardiinae lineage, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner. Males in congeners typically become more intensely pigmented and actively pursue females, displaying lateral body postures and driving rivals away from preferred spawning areas around fine-leaved vegetation or submerged root mats.
EOL records sexual reproduction for the species, consistent with the standard oviparous mode of the genus. Spawning is expected to occur among vegetation or over substrate, with adhesive eggs deposited and abandoned. No parental care has been documented in the genus. The species' assignment to Stevardiinae is taxonomically relevant here: several members of that clade show internal fertilisation or sperm storage, but whether such derived traits apply to Gephyrocharax specifically remains unconfirmed in the primary literature.

Hatching time at typical temperatures for sub-Andean Amazonian species is generally in the range of 24–60 hours for small characids, with larvae becoming free-swimming within several days. First foods for fry of this size class would be infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, followed by freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. These details are inferred from related species; species-specific captive breeding data for G. chaparae remain to be documented.
In the aquarium
Gephyrocharax chaparae is not a species commonly encountered in the ornamental trade, and detailed husbandry accounts from the hobby are limited. Based on its ecology and the care requirements of related small Amazonian characids, it would be expected to do best in a planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the cooler tropical range of 68–75 °F — conditions that reflect its Andean foothill origins rather than the warmer lowland Amazon.
As a small, slender schooling fish it should be kept in groups; the active, open-water disposition of Gephyrocharax species suggests a tank with a long swimming lane and some current. Peaceful community tankmates of similar size — small tetras, pencilfish, or diminutive corydoras — would be appropriate. Lighting at moderate intensity with a dark substrate and some riparian cover such as driftwood and overhanging plants would replicate the shaded river margins of the Chapare system. Any specimens encountered in trade are likely wild-caught given the absence of established captive populations, and acclimatisation to aquarium conditions should be conducted gradually.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Gephyrocharax chaparae as Near Threatened (NT) on 21 April 2014. The assessment reflects the species' restricted endemic range — confined to the Chapare River basin in Bolivia — and the ongoing pressures affecting freshwater fish communities across the upper Mamoré drainage, including habitat degradation from agriculture, deforestation, and expanding human settlement in the Chapare region, which is also a centre of coca cultivation and associated land-use change.
Near Threatened indicates that the species does not currently meet the quantitative thresholds for a threatened category but is close to qualifying, or is likely to qualify in the near future if pressures continue. Given the narrow range and limited population data for this species, monitoring efforts focused on the Chapare basin fish community would be important for tracking status changes. The species is not known to be established in aquaculture or captive breeding programmes, leaving the wild population as the only reserve for the taxon.
