Taxonomy & naming
Gephyrocharax intermedius was described by Seth Eugene Meek and Samuel Frederick Hildebrand in 1916, with the type locality given as the Río Chame in Panama. The holotype (FMNH 8945) is held at the Field Museum of Natural History; the specimen's caudal fin is recorded as damaged. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Gephyrocharax intermedius Meek & Hildebrand, 1916.
The genus Gephyrocharax comprises 13 valid species distributed across both the Cis-Andean and Trans-Andean slopes of Neotropical South and Central America. It is placed in subfamily Stevardiinae of the family Characidae. Earlier classifications assigned Stevardiinae to a separate family Stevardiidae, and some older literature reflects that arrangement; current consensus returns the group to Characidae. G. intermedius is the only member of the genus known from Panama. Weitzman and Fink (1985) provided clarification of the type locality and genus relationships; reproductive biology of the genus was documented by Burns et al. (1995).
Morphology
Gephyrocharax intermedius is a small, elongated characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in, making it one of the smaller members of its genus. The body plan is slender and streamlined, suited to life in flowing water. Like others in Stevardiinae, it possesses the adipose fin characteristic of most characids.
The original collectors described the fish as resembling a brook trout in overall form and stance — a striking comparison that conveys both the elongated profile and the cold, clear-water stream habitat the species favours. Mating
Gephyrocharax intermedius belongs to a genus documented as practising internal insemination, a reproductive strategy that sets Stevardiinae apart from most other characids. Burns et al. (1995) documented insemination in the genus, though the precise timing and site of fertilisation within the female remain only partially understood across Stevardiinae as a whole.
The mating behaviour of G. intermedius specifically has not been described in the literature accessible for this article. Gephyrocharax intermedius is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade and is essentially unknown as an aquarium fish; the available husbandry information is therefore limited. Given its natural habitat in clear, flowing Panamanian streams, it would be expected to do best in well-oxygenated, moderately cool water with good current, kept as a group in a species-appropriate setting with fine-leaved plants or open sandy substrate.
The species' small size (under 2 in) would make it compatible in theory with other small, peaceful stream-dwelling species, but its rarity in captivity means that firm husbandry recommendations cannot be drawn from hobbyist experience. Anyone keeping this fish should prioritise replicating its native stream conditions — clean, well-filtered, oxygen-rich water — and treat published accounts with caution given how sparse the captive record is.
Conservation
Gephyrocharax intermedius is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 1 May 2019 under criterion B1ab(iii). The criterion reflects a restricted extent of occurrence combined with continuing decline in the area, extent, or quality of habitat — in this case the Chamae River basin of Panama.
The principal threat is habitat degradation within its limited range. A species endemic to a single small river basin has no buffer against local deterioration: population declines in the Chamae system cannot be offset by immigration from elsewhere. Agricultural runoff, deforestation in the catchment, and broader land-use change in the region all threaten the water quality and stream integrity that this apparently cold-water specialist requires. The species is not known to be collected for the ornamental trade in meaningful numbers. Continued monitoring of the Chamae watershed and formal protection of key stream reaches would benefit both this species and the broader freshwater community of the basin.
