Gephyrocharax caucanus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912, with the type locality given as the Río La Vieja near Cartago, Cauca Valley, Colombia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid combination as Gephyrocharax caucanus Eigenmann, 1912. The genus Gephyrocharax belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae, a clade within the broader Characidae that encompasses a diverse assemblage of South American small-bodied characins. FishBase currently places the genus in Stevardiidae rather than Characidae sensu stricto, reflecting ongoing instability in characid higher classification; the name Caracidae is retained here per site convention.
The specific epithet caucanus refers to the Cauca Valley and the Cauca River drainage, the species' sole known range. GBIF occurrence records corroborate the type specimen data and do not expand the known range beyond the upper Cauca basin. Morphology

General guidelines for small Andean Stevardiinae suggest soft to moderately hard water and temperatures in the cooler tropical range, consistent with its 2953–3445 ft elevation. Any keeper sourcing this species should prioritise replicating surface habitat structure with abundant fine-leaved plants and excellent filtration, and should be aware that its restriction to a single river basin means wild-caught specimens would represent conservation-sensitive material.
