Hemigrammus mahnerti is a small, slender characid from the Paraguay river basin of South America, described in 1989 and named in honour of the Austrian naturalist Dr. Volker Mahnert. Rarely encountered in the hobby, it is one of more than seventy species currently placed in Hemigrammus — a genus whose sheer size reflects decades of accumulated descriptions rather than a fully resolved phylogeny. Where assessed, populations appear stable within a basin that, for now, remains relatively undisturbed.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus mahnerti was described by A. Uj and J. Géry in 1989. The valid combination is recorded in subsequent regional checklists including Mirande & Koerber's 2015 Checklist of Freshwater Fishes of Argentina (CLOFFAR), which formally places the species within the Argentinian ichthyofauna. The authority is given as Uj & Géry, 1989, with the original description appearing in the context of Paraguay-basin small characids.

Hemigrammus is a large, genus-level assemblage within the family Characidae encompassing well over seventy species at present count. The genus has long been acknowledged to be in need of a comprehensive revision, as its boundaries — especially with the closely related Hyphessobrycon — are defined more by convention than by robust synapomorphies. H. mahnerti has not been the subject of subsequent reclassification and remains placed in Hemigrammus in current literature.

Early locality records include Casciotta et al. 2003, which documented the species at Laguna Blanca in the San Pedro department of Paraguay, one of the first published records from that site. This and subsequent regional surveys established the species as a genuine constituent of the Paraguay-basin characid fauna rather than a range outlier.

Morphology

Hemigrammus mahnerti is a small fish, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1 in. This places it among the smaller members of the genus — broadly comparable in size to well-known dwarf tetras yet offering none of their hobbyist recognition. The body form is that typical of Hemigrammus: moderately elongate and compressed, with a complete lateral line, a small adipose fin, and the forked tail characteristic of characids.

Detailed colour descriptions from wild-caught material are limited in the accessible literature, but the species' occurrence at Laguna Blanca — a lakeshore habitat with aquatic vegetation — is consistent with the translucent-to-silvery body typical of small, plant-dwelling characids. A dark midlateral stripe or caudal spot is a common element among Hemigrammus species of similar size and range; specific markings for H. mahnerti require reference to the original description, which is not reproduced in the open-access sources available for this account.

Habitat

Hemigrammus mahnerti occurs in the Paraná and Paraguay River basins of South America, a vast lowland drainage covering parts of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. The IUCN assessment identifies the río Paraguay basin as the core of its geographic range, with populations recorded in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. The Plazi-archived CLOFFAR reference and the Laguna Blanca record from San Pedro, Paraguay both confirm a presence in standing and slow-flowing waters within this system.

Laguna Blanca, the best-documented site, is a shallow subtropical lake set within gallery forest and grassland in the Paraguayan Chaco-transition zone. Such habitats typically offer warm, soft to moderately hard freshwater with abundant aquatic macrophytes, submerged wood, and leaf litter — microhabitats exploited by the small characids with which H. mahnerti co-occurs. FishBase classifies the species under temperate freshwater, reflecting the seasonally variable temperatures of the subtropical Paraguay basin rather than strictly tropical conditions.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Hemigrammus mahnerti a trophic level of 3.2, consistent with a diet centred on small invertebrates and zooplankton. This is a broadly characteristic feeding guild for small characids inhabiting vegetated margins and open shallow water, where they forage on microcrustaceans, midge larvae, and other small aquatic organisms.

In the aquarium, small Hemigrammus are generally easy to feed: good-quality micro-pellets, finely ground flake, and small frozen or live foods such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and Cyclops all suit the size and feeding style of a fish maxing out below 1 in standard length. Variety in the diet supports condition, immune function, and natural colouration.

Mating

No specific observations of courtship behaviour in Hemigrammus mahnerti appear in the literature accessible for this account. Based on what is known of the genus, mating follows the typical egg-scattering pattern of small characids: males pursue and display to females among fine-leaved plants or in open water, and spawning is initiated without the formation of pair bonds.

Small Hemigrammus are generally continuous or near-continuous spawners under favourable conditions, producing repeated small spawning events rather than a single large seasonal clutch. Adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered over vegetation and substrate, with no territory held and no parental investment beyond the act of fertilisation.

Breeding

Hemigrammus mahnerti has not been reported in cultivation in the accessible hobby literature, and no aquarium-breeding accounts are available for this account. By analogy with the better-known small Hemigrammus and Hyphessobrycon species of the Paraguay basin, captive spawning would be expected to follow the standard egg-scattering method: a well-conditioned pair or group released into a tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with gentle filtration and slightly warm, soft, acidic water to encourage activity.

Eggs would be expected to be small and adhesive, scattered loosely among vegetation, and to hatch within one to three days at typical breeding temperatures. Adults will consume both eggs and newly hatched fry; separating the adults or harvesting the spawning medium immediately after spawning is standard practice. Fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food for the first few days before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus mahnerti is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. Its small size — under 1 in standard length — and origin in the Paraguay basin make it biologically compatible with the general husbandry parameters used for small South American tetras: temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, soft to moderately hard water, a pH in the neutral range or slightly acidic, and a well-planted tank with some open swimming space.

Should specimens become available, they would logically be kept in groups of six or more, as schooling behaviour provides the social cohesion that small characids require for normal behaviour and reduced stress. Tankmates should be similarly small and peaceful; the species' 1 in maximum size means that even typical community fish such as larger tetras represent a potential predation risk. The species' obscurity in the trade reflects the depth of the Hemigrammus genus — many valid, scientifically described species remain outside the hobby entirely, collected and documented by ichthyologists but never reaching the ornamental pipeline.

Conservation

Hemigrammus mahnerti is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment completed in March 2021 reporting a stable population trend. The assessment notes that the species is distributed across the río Paraguay basin in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, and that no obvious threats to its populations have been identified; the habitat within its range remains relatively little disturbed compared to more heavily impacted Neotropical freshwater systems.

While Least Concern status is reassuring, the Paraguay basin faces ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, deforestation, wetland conversion, and hydrological modification. These are long-term drivers that affect entire freshwater fish communities, including small characids. The species' wide basin-level range is a buffer against localised impacts, but continued habitat monitoring and periodic reassessment remain important given the trajectory of land use across the region.
