Hemigrammus tridens was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907 from material collected at Pypucú stream in Paraguay. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Hemigrammus tridens Eigenmann, 1907. The species belongs to the large characid genus Hemigrammus, which encompasses numerous small South American schooling tetras.
FishBase notes that American tetra families have been reclassified in recent systematic work, with the broader group sometimes treated under Acestrorhamphidae; however, Hemigrammus tridens is retained within Characidae under current Catalog of Fishes usage. Type and cotype specimens were deposited at the time of description, with the type locality fixed as Pypucú stream, Paraguay.
A 2017 publication recorded the species for the first time from the Paraná River basin in Argentina and Paraguay, significantly extending the known distribution beyond the original Paraguayan type locality.
Morphology
H. tridens is a very small tetra. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1 in, though this figure is considered questionable; an alternative maximum of 1.5 in total length has been reported and is likely the more representative upper size for wild individuals. Like other Hemigrammus, the body is slender, laterally compressed, and typical of small schooling characids.
The specific epithet tridens (Latin: three-toothed) alludes to the dentition, a character that Eigenmann used to distinguish the species within the genus. Detailed meristic data for this species are sparse in the available literature, and the field marks that separate it from closely related congeners require careful examination of specimens.
Habitat
Hemigrammus tridens inhabits freshwater streams of the Paraguay River basin and the Paraná River basin in South America, with confirmed records from Paraguay and Argentina. It is classified as a benthopelagic freshwater species, occupying the mid-water and lower reaches of stream habitats.
Ecological survey data indicate that H. tridens is significantly more abundant in streams with lower levels of urbanisation, suggesting a preference for cleaner, less impacted water bodies. This sensitivity to anthropogenic disturbance has been noted in Brazilian fish community studies examining the effects of urban expansion on stream assemblages, where the species serves as an indicator of better-preserved freshwater environments. Water temperatures in the Paraguay drainage range broadly, with FishBase recording 73–77 °F as typical for this species.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding studies have been published for Hemigrammus tridens. Like other small Hemigrammus tetras it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, foraging on small invertebrates, zooplankton, and plant matter in the water column and at the substrate surface — the typical generalist diet of small characids occupying productive lowland stream habitats.
In the aquarium, analogous small tetras of the genus accept a wide range of foods including quality flake, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen invertebrates such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and micro-worms. A varied diet supports better condition and colouration.
Mating
No published observations of mating behaviour specific to Hemigrammus tridens are available in the accessible literature. Based on the biology of the genus, courtship would be expected to involve males pursuing females into areas of fine-leaved vegetation or other submerged cover, with brief, vigorous spawning rushes typical of small egg-scattering characids.
As in related Hemigrammus species, spawning is likely triggered or enhanced by water changes, slight temperature shifts, and increasing photoperiod — environmental cues that mimic the onset of the South American wet season. Males of small Hemigrammus species often show minor colour intensification during courtship, though this has not been specifically documented for H. tridens.
Breeding
Hemigrammus tridens has not been documented as bred in the aquarium hobby to any notable extent, and no detailed captive breeding reports are available in the literature reviewed for this article. The reproductive strategy is expected to follow the standard Hemigrammus pattern: open egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, producing small adhesive eggs with no parental care. Adults would readily consume their own eggs, making separation of the spawning substrate advisable.
Fry of small Hemigrammus species are typically tiny and require infusoria or similarly minute first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the species' preference for less disturbed, cooler stream environments, conditioning at the lower end of the temperature range may be beneficial for breeding attempts.
In the aquarium
Hemigrammus tridens is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade and is essentially a specialist or biotope aquarist's fish rather than a mainstream hobby species. Its small size — under 1.5 in — makes it suitable for nano and small-tank setups where it should be kept in schools of at least six to eight individuals to express natural behaviour and reduce stress.
Biotope-appropriate aquascaping for a Paraguay-Paraná lowland stream would include a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, driftwood, leaf litter, and fine-leaved aquatic plants or submerged vegetation. Water conditions following the Paraguay drainage: temperatures around 73–77 °F, near-neutral to slightly acidic pH, and soft to moderately hard water. The species' documented sensitivity to urbanisation and degraded water quality suggests it would be similarly intolerant of poor aquarium water conditions, making regular water changes and good filtration especially important. Peaceful tankmates of comparable size are essential.
Conservation
Hemigrammus tridens is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 04 March 2021 by Flávio Lima of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas. The Least Concern designation reflects the species' occurrence across a reasonably broad area of the Paraguay and Paraná drainages and the absence of evidence for a rapid population decline.
Nonetheless, ecological research from Brazilian stream surveys documents that H. tridens abundance declines markedly in urbanised catchments, indicating real vulnerability to habitat degradation even if overall population status remains stable at present. Continued conversion of riparian zones, urban runoff, and agricultural intensification in the La Plata watershed represent ongoing pressures on the stream communities in which this species lives. Its value as a bioindicator of stream health underscores the importance of preserving less-disturbed freshwater habitats throughout the Paraguay and Paraná basins.
