Hyphessobrycon diancistrus is a small characid from the Orinoco and upper Amazon drainages, first described from the Río Vichada in Colombia in 1977. Males carry a distinctive pair of symmetrical dark blotches at the tips of the caudal-fin lobes — an unusual ornamentation for the genus — along with large fin hooks on the anal fin that are a reliable indicator of sex. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, the species occurs in slow-flowing blackwater tributaries and floodplain lakes across Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela, where it remains common within undisturbed reaches of its range.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon diancistrus was described by Stanley H. Weitzman in 1977 in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington. The type locality is the Río Vichada, a southern tributary of the middle Orinoco in Colombia. Weitzman diagnosed the species on a combination of characters unusual within Hyphessobrycon: two symmetrical dark blotches placed at the tips of the upper and lower caudal-fin lobes, the absence of a humeral blotch, a relatively short anal fin, and — in mature males — one or two conspicuously enlarged, hook-like spines on the anal-fin rays. The species has remained in Hyphessobrycon under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest and most heterogeneous genera in Characidae, and its monophyly has been questioned repeatedly; ongoing phylogenetic revisions continue to reorganise the broader family. For the purposes of this atlas the valid name as recorded in the Catalog of Fishes, Hyphessobrycon diancistrus Weitzman, 1977, is used.

Morphology

H. diancistrus is a small, slender characid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in for males; females are notably smaller, reaching around 1 in SL, making this pronounced size dimorphism one of the species' diagnostic features within the genus.

The most visually distinctive characters are the paired dark blotches at the tips of both caudal-fin lobes — a pigmentation pattern that sets this species apart from most Hyphessobrycon. The humeral blotch typical of many relatives is absent. Mature males develop one or two large fin hooks on the anal-fin rays; these bony hooks, common across many characids, are a reliable sexing character. The body is otherwise typical of a small schooling characid: laterally compressed, with a silvery ground colour, the caudal-fin markings providing the main contrasting feature.

Habitat

The species ranges across the Orinoco and upper Negro River basins, with records from Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. It occupies slow-flowing tributaries and floodplain lakes in both clear-water and blackwater systems — the sheltered, vegetated margins of larger river drainages rather than main channels.

The IUCN notes that H. diancistrus occurs predominantly at relatively undisturbed sites. Blackwater and clearwater habitats in the Orinoco and upper Amazon systems are characteristically warm, with soft, acidic water; floodplain lakes and quiet backwaters provide the gentle flow and submerged plant cover that small schooling characids of this type require. Population trend is recorded as stable.

Feeding

The IUCN assessment lists aquatic invertebrates as the primary dietary category for H. diancistrus, consistent with the feeding ecology of small Hyphessobrycon species generally. In the wild, a fish of this size and habitat would pick small crustaceans, insect larvae, worms, and other microinvertebrates from the water column and substrate margins.

In the aquarium it can be expected to accept good-quality micro-pellets and fine flake, supplemented with frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms. A variety of small-particle foods helps maintain condition and colour. Like most small characids it feeds actively throughout the day and does well with several small portions rather than a single large feeding.

Mating

H. diancistrus is an egg-scattering characid with no parental care, the reproductive strategy typical of the genus. Males are substantially larger than females and develop prominent anal-fin hooks in maturity; these hooks, found in many Characidae, are thought to play a role in holding the female close during the spawning embrace, improving fertilisation efficiency.

In the wild, spawning presumably takes place over fine-leaved aquatic plants or among root mats in sheltered backwaters, with eggs released and abandoned. The marked sexual size dimorphism — males nearly 50% longer than females at maximum recorded sizes — suggests male–male competition may also influence access to spawning sites or females.

Breeding

Like most Hyphessobrycon, H. diancistrus would be expected to scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with the eggs hatching within a few days at tropical temperatures. No parental care is given and adults will consume eggs given the opportunity, so removing parents or transferring the spawning medium after spawning is standard practice.

No detailed captive-breeding account is on record in the available literature, and the species is rarely collected for the hobby. General Hyphessobrycon breeding protocol applies: condition adults on varied live and frozen foods, provide fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and maintain soft, slightly acidic water consistent with the blackwater origins of the species. Fry are tiny at hatching and require infusoria or rotifers as first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon diancistrus is an uncommonly encountered species in the hobby; the IUCN notes it is occasionally collected for the ornamental trade but not heavily. Aquarists who obtain it should keep it in a school of six or more — small characids of this type are far less stressed and show more natural behaviour in a group — in a tank with soft, warm, slightly acidic water reflecting its blackwater origins.

A dark substrate, subdued lighting, and planting with fine-leaved or floating plants will show the fish at their best and reduce stress. Given the modest adult size, a 23.5 in aquarium suffices for a school of six to eight, though larger is always preferable for water-quality stability. Peaceful tankmates of a similar size — other small Hyphessobrycon, dwarf corydoras, or small pencilfish — are appropriate. The caudal-fin blotches are the main attraction and show best against a dark background.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon diancistrus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed in March 2021. The population trend is recorded as stable, and no major threats are currently reported. The species occupies a broad range across the Orinoco and upper Amazon drainages in Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela, occurring primarily at undisturbed sites within blackwater and clearwater tributaries and floodplain lakes.

While no acute conservation pressures are identified, the habitats H. diancistrus depends on — intact floodplain lake systems and undisturbed blackwater tributaries — are broadly threatened across South America by deforestation, agricultural runoff, and river modification. The stable population assessment reflects current conditions; habitat quality in its core range will determine whether it retains Least Concern status in future cycles.
