Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon georgettae was described by Jacques Géry in 1961, with the type locality recorded as South America, Suriname. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) treats the name as valid under Hyphessobrycon. The species belongs to one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae, a group that spans enormous morphological and ecological diversity from southern Mexico south to the Río de la Plata basin of Argentina.
The genus Hyphessobrycon was erected to accommodate smaller characins separable from Hemigrammus and related groups, and it has historically served as something of a taxonomic catch-all. Many species-level and generic revisions have been published over the decades and the boundaries of Hyphessobrycon remain an active research area; H. georgettae has not been the subject of a post-description revision and its generic placement is stable for now.
Jacques Géry (1917–2007) was one of the foremost authorities on Neotropical characid fishes, describing hundreds of species over a career spanning several decades. H. georgettae is one of a number of species he described from Suriname material, a region he worked extensively in the mid-twentieth century.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon georgettae is a small, slender characin reaching a maximum reported standard length of 1.5 in. Like most members of the genus it is laterally compressed and translucent to silvery in overall tone, with the typical characid body plan: a single dorsal fin set just past mid-body, an adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and the small fleshy pelvic and anal fins characteristic of the group.
Detailed meristic and colouration data for this species in the literature are limited. It shares the general Hyphessobrycon pattern of a pale or silvery body that may show a faint lateral stripe and variable humeral or caudal spotting depending on mood and condition. As with many small tetras, the colours intensify in well-conditioned fish kept in appropriate water and lighting, and fade under stress or in poor conditions.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Ripe females are noticeably deeper-bodied than males, and this difference in abdominal fullness is the most reliable field indicator of sex in the aquarium.
Habitat
Hyphessobrycon georgettae is known from the freshwaters of Suriname, South America. FishBase records it as a benthopelagic freshwater species associated with the tropical floodplain systems of that country. The genus Hyphessobrycon is broadly distributed across Neotropical freshwaters, but H. georgettae appears to have a relatively restricted range centred on Suriname.
Hobbyist sources describe the species as inhabiting soft, slightly acidic rivers and floodplains — the typical blackwater or clearwater environment of Suriname's interior drainage. Such habitats are characterised by low conductivity, pH on the acidic side of neutral, heavy riparian shade, and the presence of fine-leaved aquatic and marginal vegetation over soft substrates.
Temperature data from FishBase give a range of 73–81 °F (73–81 °F) for this species, consistent with the warm lowland tropical climate of Suriname's river systems.
Feeding
Hyphessobrycon georgettae is an omnivore, as is typical of the genus. The natural diet of Hyphessobrycon species generally comprises small crustaceans, insects and insect larvae, annelids, and zooplankton taken in the water column, supplemented by algae and other plant or organic material.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts a broad diet. Hobbyist accounts recommend a varied regimen of quality flake or micro-pellet as a staple, supplemented with small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) and bloodworms (Chironomid larvae), and plant-based or spirulina-containing foods to provide vegetable matter. Like most tetras, it feeds throughout the water column and benefits from multiple small feedings daily rather than a single large one.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon georgettae is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, the reproductive guild characteristic of the vast majority of Hyphessobrycon. Males court females with displays in the open water or along plant stands, and spawning takes place among fine-leaved vegetation or other suitable spawning substrate where the adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs come to rest.
The species follows the standard characid mating pattern: no pair bond is formed, eggs are deposited and immediately abandoned, and both parents will consume eggs if they encounter them. In the aquarium, conditioning pairs or small groups on live and frozen foods and then moving them to a separate, well-planted spawning tank is the recommended approach to producing eggs that survive.
Breeding
Breeding Hyphessobrycon georgettae follows the familiar procedure for small, egg-scattering tetras. Conditioned adults should be moved to a dedicated spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water (pH around 6.0–6.5, low hardness around 4 dGH), a temperature in the upper part of the species' range, dim lighting, and a dense bed of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or a synthetic spawning mop.
Eggs are scattered among the plants and are adhesive, sticking to leaf surfaces and substrate. Because adults readily eat their own eggs, spawning mops or plant bunches should be removed to a separate rearing container once spawning is observed. Fry hatch after a few days at tropical temperatures and are initially very small, requiring infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Parental care is absent at every stage.

In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon georgettae is a peaceful schooling fish well suited to planted community aquaria. Like other small tetras it is most settled and displays best in groups of six or more; solitary or under-grouped fish are stressed, shy, and prone to hiding. The species poses no threat to tankmates and is itself at risk of intimidation from larger or boisterous fish, so companions should be similarly sized and peaceful.
Water should be soft and slightly acidic — pH around 6.3 and hardness around 4 dGH suit the species well according to hobbyist records — and temperature maintained between 23 and 81 °F (73–81 °F). Good biological filtration with gentle flow, shaded areas created by floating or overhanging plants, and a dark substrate all reflect the Suriname floodplain conditions the species comes from and help bring out its best colouration.
Feeding is straightforward; the fish accepts flake, micro-pellets, and live or frozen invertebrate foods readily. Its small adult size means it is compatible with nano and smaller community tanks provided water quality is maintained, though as with all small tetras regular partial water changes are essential to long-term health.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon georgettae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 4 March 2021. The Least Concern listing reflects a population that, at the time of assessment, was not considered to be declining at a rate or to a degree that would qualify the species for a threatened category.
Suriname's interior freshwaters remain among the better-preserved in South America, with relatively low human population density and extensive intact forest cover in much of the species' presumed range. The species is reported as harmless to humans and does not appear on CITES appendices or under CMS.
No specific conservation actions are recorded for this species. Ongoing monitoring of Suriname's freshwater fish communities and their habitats remains the most important safeguard for small, range-restricted endemics such as this one.
