Hemibrycon surinamensis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1962. The type locality is Brownscreek, Suriname, and the holotype measures 2.5 in standard length. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Hemibrycon surinamensis Géry, 1962, placing the species within the family Characidae.
The genus Hemibrycon belongs to the diverse characid tribe Stevardiini and is distributed across northern and central South America. Members share a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body plan, a well-developed lateral line, and a small adipose fin behind the dorsal — the classic characid Bauplan. The genus is species-rich and taxonomically challenging; several members are superficially similar and are separated primarily by meristic and morphometric characters that require close examination of specimens. H. surinamensis is recorded from both Suriname and from Brazilian Amazon tributary systems, suggesting a wider distribution than the original type locality alone implies.
Morphology
Hemibrycon surinamensis has the characteristic body form of the genus: moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with a fairly deep but streamlined profile. The holotype measured 2.5 in standard length, and adult specimens approach this size in the wild; the body is described as compressed and moderately elongate, consistent with a midwater, open-water swimmer rather than a bottom-dwelling or heavily built species.
Colouration in life is typical of many river-dwelling characids: a silvery base with a reflective lateral stripe or band along the midline, fading to a paler belly. The fins are generally hyaline to lightly pigmented. Like most Hemibrycon species, H. surinamensis lacks the flamboyant red, blue, or black markings of the ornamental tetras popular in the hobby, and its appeal to aquarists is more scientific than decorative. Females are likely deeper-bodied when gravid, as is typical across the genus, though detailed descriptions of sexual dimorphism for this species in the literature are sparse.
Habitat
Hemibrycon surinamensis inhabits the lowland freshwater systems of Suriname and Brazilian Amazon tributaries. Ecological data from a parasite-community study conducted in a Brazilian Amazon tributary records the species living in warm, turbid, and notably oxygen-poor water: mean temperature 31.0 ± 32 °F and dissolved oxygen as low as 1.9 mg/L — conditions that would be considered stressful for many temperate or headwater fish but are characteristic of slow, warm lowland Amazonian blackwater and whitewater floodplain channels.
FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic and freshwater, consistent with a species that uses the lower to mid water column in river channels and associated flooded habitats. The type locality in Suriname (Brownscreek) is a lowland stream draining into the broader coastal plain drainage network. Across its range the species likely encounters a range of substrate types, aquatic vegetation, and turbidity regimes depending on season and local hydrology, with the flooded forest margins and river margins of northern South America providing the principal habitat template.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Hemibrycon surinamensis is available in the accessible literature. Hemibrycon species generally are regarded as opportunistic omnivores or insectivores, consuming small aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface, and algae or plant material when invertebrate prey is scarce — a feeding guild shared by most small to mid-sized open-water characids of South American rivers.
In the field, the warm, turbid Amazonian tributary habitats this species occupies support abundant chironomid larvae, microcrustaceans, and other invertebrate food sources, as well as allochthonous inputs from riparian vegetation. Detailed observations of reproductive behaviour in Hemibrycon surinamensis have not been published in the accessible scientific literature. Based on the reproductive biology documented for close relatives within Hemibrycon and the broader Stevardiini, the species is expected to be a free-spawning egg-scatterer with no parental care — the default mode across most small characids.
In related species, males typically pursue females actively during spawning runs, and spawning is triggered by seasonal flooding or rising water temperature in the wild. Eggs are adhesive and deposited among submerged vegetation or fine substrate; males do not guard eggs or fry. Until species-specific data are available, these broad characid generalisations represent the best working hypothesis for H. surinamensis.
Breeding
No captive-breeding accounts for Hemibrycon surinamensis appear in the hobby or scientific literature. The species is not a commonly kept aquarium fish, and detailed breeding protocols have not been established. Extrapolating from the genus and family, spawning would be expected to follow the standard characid approach: free-scattering of small, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants or substrate, with no parental care and a requirement to remove adults post-spawning to prevent egg predation.
Incubation times and fry requirements are unknown for this species specifically. Anyone attempting to breed H. surinamensis in captivity would likely work from the template established for similar-sized river tetras: soft to moderately hard, warm water; fine-leaved spawning medium such as Java moss or synthetic mops; separation of eggs; and microscopic first foods (infusoria, rotifers, newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii) for the fry. Data sparse — this is a species where original observation would contribute meaningfully to the literature.
In the aquarium
Hemibrycon surinamensis is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade and is unlikely to be encountered in retail. Its interest to aquarists is primarily scientific — it represents a lineage of widespread Neotropical stream fish that form part of the background characid fauna of Suriname and Amazonian tributaries rather than a species prized for colour or behaviour.
Were it to be kept, the water parameters documented from its Brazilian Amazon tributary habitat — temperatures around 82–88 °F and low dissolved oxygen — suggest it is adapted to warm, sluggish, oxygen-depleted conditions that differ from the cool, well-oxygenated water often recommended for ornamental tetras. Good surface agitation and warm water would be more important than precise softness targets. A species tank or biotope setup reproducing a turbid Amazonian tributary, with driftwood, leaf litter, and minimal planting, would suit it better than a bright planted display. The fish's plainness, obscurity, and the challenges of sourcing it mean it is unlikely to become a mainstream aquarium subject in the near term.
Conservation
Hemibrycon surinamensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). This is unsurprising for a species whose range spans Suriname and Brazilian Amazon tributaries but that receives little dedicated research attention — many Neotropical characids with similar distributions remain outside the IUCN assessment queue.
The species inhabits lowland river systems in the northern Amazon basin and Suriname coastal drainages — a region that faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural encroachment, and the alteration of floodplain hydrology. While no targeted data on population trends for H. surinamensis exist, the broader threats to Amazonian tributary fish communities are well documented and relevant to any species occupying these habitats. Formal assessment and basic population survey work would be the logical first step toward understanding whether the species warrants any conservation concern.
