Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia hemigrammoides was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1965. It belongs to the large and heterogeneous genus Moenkhausia within the family Characidae, a group whose internal relationships continue to be revised. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Moenkhausia hemigrammoides Géry, 1965.
The species is placed within the subfamily Stethaprioninae by some workers, and a 2019 paper in the journal Check List documented new records from Colombia (Ariari and Inírida river drainages, upper Orinoco basin) and provided additional morphological comments, confirming the species' presence well beyond its originally described Guianan range. The full lateral line is the single most useful external character for separating this species from close relatives in the field.
Morphology
This is a slender, laterally compressed tetra with a silvery body and the typical large eye of the genus. Maximum size reaches around 1.5 in standard length in the aquarium; wild-caught specimens often measure 1–1.5 in SL. The species carries a complete lateral line running the full length of the flank to the base of the caudal fin — the character that gives it its placement and separates it most readily from Hemigrammus unilineatus, where the lateral line is abbreviated.
Body colouration is unremarkable by tetra standards: predominantly silver with a faint iridescent sheen and a dark caudal spot at the tail base. The finnage is largely hyaline. Under good lighting and in good condition, the flanks show a subtle horizontal reflective stripe. The species lacks the bold chromatic patterning of its more popular congeners, but its lively, energetic movement and tight schooling behaviour make up for a muted palette.
Habitat
In nature, Moenkhausia hemigrammoides inhabits clear, well-oxygenated waters in Suriname (Cottica and Coppename river drainages), French Guiana, and the Ariari and Inírida drainages of Colombia. FishBase records the species from counter-current zones of rapids and creeks with rocky substrates — faster-moving, oxygen-rich microhabitats within otherwise lowland forested drainages.
Water conditions in these environments are soft and slightly acidic to neutral: temperatures in the range of 72–77 °F (72–77 °F), pH up to 7.5, and hardness up to 15 dH. The species is gregarious and occurs in shoals. Clear-water systems with minimal suspended sediment appear to be the ecological preference, which has direct relevance to captive husbandry.
Feeding
Moenkhausia hemigrammoides is an omnivore. In the wild it almost certainly exploits the full range of small invertebrates, insect larvae, and organic particles available in its rocky, fast-water habitats — the typical feeding mode of active, shoaling tetras in clear Neotropical streams.
In captivity the species accepts flake food, micropellets, and frozen or live invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and mosquito larvae readily. A varied diet with regular live or frozen components keeps the fish in best condition and colour. The species' small adult size and active foraging pace mean frequent small feedings are preferable to a single large daily meal.
Mating
Like virtually all small tetras, Moenkhausia hemigrammoides is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Males likely display to females in the typical characid fashion — fins spread, body angled, fleeting chase sequences through vegetation — with spawning taking place among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate.
No confirmed captive spawning records are documented in the available literature for this species. The presumed mating behaviour follows the standard Moenkhausia pattern: brief, repeated spawning rushes culminating in the simultaneous release of eggs and milt, after which the adults take no further interest in the spawn.
Breeding
No confirmed captive breeding records are documented for Moenkhausia hemigrammoides. By analogy with related Moenkhausia species, breeding would be expected to follow the typical tetra protocol: a separate, well-planted breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.8, hardness below 8 dH) at the warmer end of the species' temperature range, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops to collect the adhesive eggs, and prompt removal of the adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Eggs in comparable species hatch within 24–48 hours, and the fry become free-swimming after a further 3–4 days. First foods would typically be infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. Anyone achieving confirmed spawning of this rarely kept species would be contributing genuinely new husbandry knowledge.
In the aquarium
The signal tetra is rarely encountered in the trade; when available, it comes mostly from Surinamese or Colombian collectors rather than commercial farms. It is described by experienced keepers as a very lively, energetic fish that does best in a shoal of six or more individuals. Its active, darting movement and tight schooling behaviour are its chief attractions in a community setting.
Given its origin in clear, well-oxygenated waters, the species is sensitive to nitrate accumulation and benefits from regular, generous water changes and good mechanical filtration. Water chemistry should be soft to moderately hard and neutral to slightly acidic: 72–77 °F (72–77 °F), pH 5.5–7.0, hardness up to 12 dH. A planted aquarium with open swimming lanes suits the species well. Suitable tankmates are other small, peaceful characids and comparably sized community fish; its small size and active nature mean it should not be kept with boisterous or predatory fish.
Conservation
Moenkhausia hemigrammoides is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated March 2021. The species has high resilience and a minimum population doubling time of less than 15 months, indicating a robust wild population across its Guianan and Orinoco range.
The recent documentation of the species in Colombia's upper Orinoco drainage extends the known range considerably and suggests the population is more widespread than previously appreciated. The species is rarely exported, and wild collection pressure appears to be low. No specific conservation measures are currently required, though ongoing monitoring of habitat quality in clear-water Neotropical streams is relevant to this and many other small characids.
