Hyphessobrycon wajat is a small characid described from the Paraná River basin in Misiones Province, Argentina, by Almirón and Casciotta in 1999. Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon wajat was described by Adriana Almirón and Jorge Casciotta in 1999. The type locality is in Misiones Province, Argentina, within the Paraná River basin — a vast subtropical drainage that spans parts of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina and supports an exceptionally rich characid fauna. The valid name as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hyphessobrycon wajat Almirón & Casciotta, 1999.

The species belongs to the genus Hyphessobrycon, a large, broadly defined grouping within the family Characidae that historically served as something of a catch-all for small South American tetras. Molecular and morphological work in recent decades has progressively restructured the group, but H. wajat has not featured prominently in these revisions, and it remains in Hyphessobrycon. Primary literature on the species is sparse, and it is seldom encountered in the aquarium hobby.

Morphology

Published data on the morphology of Hyphessobrycon wajat are limited.
