Iguanodectes gracilis is the smallest and most slender member of its genus, a mid-water schooling tetra from the blackwater tributaries of the Rio Negro basin in Brazil. Reaching just 2 in standard length, it carries the family's characteristic long, dart-shaped body on a more gracile frame than its larger relatives, darting through tannin-stained water in tight, silver-flickering schools. Although infrequently offered in the hobby, it is one of the more manageable Iguanodectes for smaller aquaria, and its restricted Amazonian range qualifies it as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Iguanodectes gracilis was described by the prolific French-Brazilian ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1993 as a new species within the genus Iguanodectes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) recognises the valid name as Iguanodectes gracilis Géry, 1993. The genus Iguanodectes belongs to the family Iguanodectidae, a small Neotropical family of characiforms whose members are sometimes called lizardfishes or lizard tetras in the trade, reflecting the long, somewhat reptilian head profile.

The genus Iguanodectes encompasses several species distributed across Amazonian blackwater systems, with I. gracilis being the most recently described and the smallest-bodied species in the group. Géry's work on Amazonian characins across several decades produced numerous species descriptions; the 1993 account of I. gracilis was part of his continuing revision of lower-Amazon and Negro-basin diversity. Because the type locality falls within the Rio Negro drainage, a river noted for extreme soft acidity, the species fits the broader ecological pattern of the genus.

Morphology

Iguanodectes gracilis reaches a maximum standard length of approximately 2 in, making it the smallest species in the genus — notably more compact than the commonly encountered I. geisleri or I. spilurus. Like all Iguanodectes, the body is elongate and cylindrical with a pointed snout and a relatively large eye. The body depth is proportionally shallow, contributing to the gracile silhouette that the specific epithet references.

Colouration in the genus generally runs to a silvery base with one or more horizontal stripes along the flanks; I. gracilis carries a lateral stripe that catches light and produces the flashing, reflective effect common to schooling tetras in open water. The fins are largely hyaline to faintly pigmented. As in many blackwater tetras, colour expression can shift with background, mood, and water quality. Sexual dimorphism, if present, is not strongly documented in the literature available; females of similarly sized Iguanodectes tend toward a slightly fuller abdomen when ripe.

Habitat

Iguanodectes gracilis is endemic to the Rio Negro basin in Brazil, one of the world's great blackwater river systems. The Rio Negro and its tributaries are characterised by water of extreme softness and low pH — typically pH 4–5 in the deeper tributaries, with negligible hardness and high concentrations of humic and fulvic acids that stain the water dark amber to black. Dissolved oxygen can be relatively low in still marginal habitats, and the near-total absence of dissolved minerals means conductivity is exceptionally low.

Within the Negro system the species is benthopelagic, occupying the mid-water and lower water column of tributaries, flooded margins, and igapó forest streams. Like other Iguanodectes, it is associated with areas of submerged leaf litter and root tangles, using structural cover while feeding in open water. The genus as a whole favours blackwater over whitewater systems, and I. gracilis fits that pattern as a Rio Negro endemic.

Feeding

Iguanodectes species are broadly omnivorous opportunists, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae, and organic particulates in the water column. Given the extreme softness and low productivity of Rio Negro blackwater, wild diets likely emphasise terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates that fall or drift into the water, supplemented by microorganisms and fine detritus.

In the aquarium, I. gracilis accepts small prepared foods — fine flake, micro-pellets — as well as small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, micro-worms, and baby brine shrimp. As a small species it benefits from foods appropriately sized to its mouth. Multiple small feedings per day suit its continuous, active foraging style. Live and frozen foods help maintain condition and colour, particularly when attempting to bring fish into breeding condition.

Mating

Specific courtship observations for I. gracilis are not well documented in the published literature, but the genus follows the open, egg-scattering spawning strategy typical of non-guarding characins. Males of Iguanodectes are slender and fast-moving; spawning presumably involves chasing and lateral displays, with pairs darting through vegetation or open water as eggs are scattered.

As with most tetras, spawning is likely most active in the early morning, possibly triggered by light changes and temperature fluctuations associated with the onset of the wet season in Amazonian habitats. In captivity, conditioning with live and frozen foods and a slight temperature rise can encourage readiness. No territorial or pair-bonding behaviour is documented in the genus.

Breeding

Iguanodectes gracilis has not been widely bred in captivity, and detailed breeding accounts are sparse. Based on genus-level biology and the broader characin pattern, the species is expected to scatter small, adhesive to semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over open substrate, with no parental care. Adults should be removed after spawning or eggs relocated, as egg predation by the parents is the norm in open-spawning tetras.

Soft, acidic water closely approximating Rio Negro conditions — pH around 5.0–6.5, very low hardness, temperature in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius — is likely important for reproductive success, as is the case for most blackwater tetras from this drainage. Fry would be expected to be small and to require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. Successful captive breeding would represent a genuine contribution to the hobby's knowledge of this rarely kept species.

In the aquarium

Iguanodectes gracilis is an uncommon aquarium fish rarely stocked by mainstream retailers, but it is suitable for the specialist keeper of small Amazonian blackwater species. Its small size — under 2 in — makes it manageable in a 23.5–31.5 in aquarium, provided the water chemistry is right. Being a Rio Negro endemic, it demands soft, acidic, low-conductivity water: pH 4.5–6.5, hardness under 5 dH, and temperature 75–82 °F. Hard or alkaline tap water without conditioning will cause chronic stress and shortened lifespan.

A well-planted aquarium with dark substrate, dim lighting filtered through floating plants, and tannin-releasing botanicals (dried leaves, seed pods) creates a close facsimile of its native habitat and will bring the fish's colours to best effect. It is peaceful and should be kept in a school of at least six to eight individuals; the schooling instinct is pronounced and solitary or small-group specimens become timid and pale. Suitable tankmates are other small, peaceful blackwater species — nano tetras, dwarf cichlids tolerant of acidic water (such as Apistogramma species), and small Corydoras that thrive in soft water.

Conservation

Iguanodectes gracilis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 10 September 2020. The Least Concern status reflects a lack of documented population declines at a level that would meet criteria for a threatened category, rather than evidence of abundance. Its restriction to the Rio Negro basin means its range is geographically limited, though the Negro is a vast river system and much of the native habitat remains structurally intact.

The Rio Negro basin benefits from relatively limited agricultural encroachment compared to other Amazonian river systems, and large portions of the watershed fall within protected or indigenous territories. Nevertheless, ongoing deforestation, ornamental fish collection, and broader Amazonian development pressures remain background threats to the species and its congeners. No specific conservation measures target I. gracilis, and monitoring of population trends in such small, rarely surveyed species is difficult. Captive-bred stock, where available, should be preferred over wild-caught fish.
