Iguanodectes purusii was described by Franz Steindachner in 1908, with type material collected from the Purus River — one of the great right-bank tributaries of the Amazon — reflected in the specific epithet. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Iguanodectes purusii (Steindachner, 1908), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Iguanodectes.
Iguanodectes is the nominal genus of the family Iguanodectidae, a small characiform family endemic to South America that was long treated as a subfamily of Characidae before molecular and morphological work elevated it to family rank. The genus currently contains a handful of species occupying Amazonian and Orinoco drainages, all sharing the same slender, streamlined body plan suited to open-water midwater schooling.
Morphology
I. purusii is a slender, laterally compressed fish with a fusiform body adapted for sustained midwater swimming. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3 in, placing it among the mid-sized members of its genus. The overall body form is elongated, with a pointed snout, a moderately forked tail, and fins held close to the body when cruising.
Colouration is typically silver with a faint lateral iridescence; a narrow dark lateral stripe or midlateral band is common in the genus, running from the head toward the caudal peduncle. Habitat
The species is broadly distributed across lowland South America, occurring in the Amazon, Guaporé, Madeira, Pastaza, and Purus river basins — a range that spans multiple major drainage systems across Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. Within those systems it favours clear to moderately turbid water, associating with mid-water open areas where schools can travel freely. Amazonian clear-water environments of this type are typically warm, soft, and mildly acidic, with low conductivity, though the wide distribution of I. purusii across multiple drainage systems suggests it tolerates some variation in ambient water chemistry. It is a schooling fish in nature and is typically encountered in groups rather than as solitary individuals.
Feeding
FishBase assigns I. purusii a trophic level of 3.3 ± 0.4, placing it at the low end of the carnivore-omnivore spectrum — consistent with a diet of small invertebrates, insects, and organic particles rather than exclusively plant material. In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of prepared foods — quality flake, micro-pellets, and small granules — and does well with a varied diet supplemented by frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Feeding in open water in small groups is the natural mode, and regular small meals suit it better than infrequent large ones.
Mating
No detailed field or laboratory studies specifically documenting courtship behaviour in I. purusii appear in the available literature. As a member of Iguanodectidae, which is embedded within the broader characiform clade, the species is expected to follow the egg-scattering reproductive pattern typical of most open-water tetras: sexually mature individuals scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over the substrate, without forming lasting pair bonds or territories.
Displaying males likely differentiate from females by subtle intensification of lateral iridescence and by active pursuit behaviour during spawning events. As in many small characiforms, spawning activity may be triggered by changes in water temperature, light cycle, or rainfall conditions in the wild, mimicking the onset of the wet season.
Breeding
Iguanodectes purusii is not frequently bred in captivity, and detailed hobbyist records for this species specifically are sparse. Based on the biology of the genus and family, reproduction is expected to follow the standard open-water egg-scattering mode: conditioned adults broadcast small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over spawning mops, after which the adults provide no parental care and should be removed to prevent egg predation.
Spawning is likely triggered by conditioning on live and frozen foods, a slight rise in temperature, and soft, mildly acidic water that approximates Amazonian blackwater conditions. Eggs would be expected to hatch within 24–48 hours at typical tropical temperatures, producing tiny fry that require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.
In the aquarium
I. purusii is an active, schooling midwater fish best suited to a spacious, well-planted aquarium with open swimming space in the central zone. A group of six or more allows the natural schooling behaviour to express itself and reduces individual stress; in smaller numbers the fish tend to be shy and less active. A tank length of 35.5 in or more is appropriate for an adult group.
Water chemistry should err on the soft, slightly acidic side to reflect the species' Amazonian origins, with temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F. Gentle to moderate current is appreciated, and the addition of tannin-rich driftwood or leaf litter can help replicate the visual environment of clear Amazonian streams while buffering pH. Tankmates should be similarly sized and peaceful; other small-to-medium characins, calm dwarf cichlids, and small catfish make suitable companions. The species is not commonly traded and may require specialist sourcing.
Conservation
Iguanodectes purusii is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 10 September 2020. The listing reflects the species' broad distribution across multiple major Amazonian drainage systems — Amazon, Guaporé, Madeira, Pastaza, and Purus — which provides a degree of resilience that narrowly endemic Amazonian species lack.
While no acute range-wide threats have driven it toward elevated risk categories, the species is not immune to the pressures affecting Amazonian freshwater biodiversity more broadly: deforestation in watershed catchments, siltation of clear-water streams, and ongoing habitat fragmentation from infrastructure development remain background threats across its range. The Least Concern status is not a guarantee of long-term stability but reflects current population trends as far as they are known.
