A slender, streamlined inhabitant of Amazonian and Orinoco blackwater streams, Iguanodectes geisleri is the fish that earns the genus its evocative common name: 'lizard tetra'. Reaching around 2 in standard length, it is a fast, shoaling omnivore of shaded tributaries with leaf-litter floors and overhanging vegetation — water soft, acid, and stained dark with tannins. Described by Jacques Géry in 1970, it is rarely encountered in the trade but rewarding in a species-appropriate biotope setup, and it is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Iguanodectes geisleri was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1970. The genus Iguanodectes belongs to the family Iguanodectidae, a small Neotropical group whose members are characterised by their elongated, laterally compressed bodies and reduced scale counts — a body plan that differs markedly from the stockier typical characins and gives rise to the 'lizard tetra' vernacular. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid combination Iguanodectes geisleri Géry, 1970.

The genus currently comprises eight accepted species. Iguanodectes geisleri shares its range in the Madeira, Negro, and Orinoco River basins with several congeners, and correct identification in the field or trade can be difficult given overlapping ranges and superficially similar colouration across the genus.

Morphology

Iguanodectes geisleri is a slender, torpedo-shaped characin reaching approximately 2 in standard length according to FishBase, with some sources citing up to 3 in for larger individuals. The body is notably elongated and laterally compressed, consistent with the lizard-tetra body plan characteristic of the genus — an adaptation for rapid movement in flowing and still blackwater environments.

The common name 'red-line lizard tetra' reflects the species' most distinctive feature: a vivid horizontal red or reddish-orange stripe running along the mid-lateral line of the body, contrasting against a silvery to pale background. This stripe, combined with the elongated form, makes it readily distinguishable from the more compact body shapes of most tetras encountered in the aquarium trade. Sexually mature females are typically deeper-bodied and more rounded in the ventral profile than males, particularly when in spawning condition.

Habitat

Iguanodectes geisleri is distributed across three major South American river systems: the Madeira, Negro, and Orinoco basins. Within these drainages it inhabits blackwater tributaries — smaller streams and channels with overhanging riparian vegetation, accumulations of leaf litter on the substrate, and morichals (palm swamps dominated by Mauritia palms) in the Orinoco llanos region. The water in these habitats is typically warm, very soft, and strongly acid, stained dark with dissolved humic and tannic acids from decaying plant material.

The Seriously Fish profile records temperature conditions of around 68 °F and pH as low as 5.0, reflecting the extreme softness and acidity of Amazonian and Orinoco blackwater. The benthopelagic designation from FishBase indicates the species occupies the lower to mid-water column, often moving through the water column in loose shoals near the bottom or among submerged roots and leaf accumulations. The species is sensitive to deteriorating water quality, reflecting its origin in clean, highly oxygenated blackwater.

Feeding

Iguanodectes geisleri is an omnivore. In natural blackwater habitats it feeds on a range of small invertebrates including small crustaceans and aquatic insect larvae, as well as algae and fallen fruit — the latter a common food source in flooded forest and riparian zones across Amazonia. This opportunistic, varied diet is typical of small characins exploiting seasonally shifting food availability in floodplain and stream environments.

In the aquarium the species accepts a broad range of prepared and live foods. High-quality micro-pellets and fine flake provide a practical staple, while regular offerings of small frozen or live invertebrates — Daphnia, brine shrimp, and similar — support condition and colouration. Some vegetable component is beneficial given the species' natural dietary breadth.

Mating

Iguanodectes geisleri is an egg-scattering characin with no parental care, following the typical pattern of open-water or plant-associated spawning seen across the family. In natural conditions spawning likely coincides with the onset of the rainy season, when rising water levels flood forest margins, temperatures fluctuate, and food availability increases — a common cue for blackwater characin reproduction.

Males in courtship condition may display to females with increased activity and lateral body presentation to show off the red lateral stripe. Spawning takes place in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation and roots, where adhesive eggs are scattered and settle among plant material or leaf litter. The species should be kept in groups with more females than males to distribute any spawning-associated stress.

Breeding

Reports of captive breeding of Iguanodectes geisleri are rare, reflecting the species' infrequent availability in the aquarium trade. The general approach applicable to blackwater egg-scattering characins applies: a species tank or dedicated breeding setup with very soft, acid water (pH 5.0–6.5, near-zero hardness) conditioned with leaf litter or peat filtration, fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, and dim lighting. A temperature drop of a degree or two followed by a rise, simulating a weather event, can trigger spawning attempts.

Adults scatter small adhesive eggs that settle into plant material or leaf litter. As with all egg-scattering characins, parents will consume eggs and fry if not removed; breeders should transfer adults after spawning or remove the spawning medium to a separate container. The eggs are sensitive to fungal infection and benefit from the mild antibacterial properties of tannin-rich water. Fry require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry preparations — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Iguanodectes geisleri is a rarely available but rewarding species for the experienced blackwater biotope enthusiast. It is peaceful, active, and a confirmed shoaling fish; groups of eight or more are recommended, with a higher proportion of females, to ensure natural behaviour and reduce inter-individual stress. A well-planted or leaf-litter-furnished aquarium with soft, acid water (pH around 5.0–6.5) and a dark substrate best replicates its natural environment and shows the red lateral stripe at its most vivid.

The species is sensitive to poor water quality and should not be kept in tanks with inadequate filtration or accumulated organic waste. Subdued lighting, achieved through floating plants or overhanging surface cover, reduces stress. Suitable tankmates are similarly small, peaceful blackwater species that share its water-chemistry requirements — small pencilfish, other Iguanodectes species, dwarf cichlids of the Apistogramma type, and small corydoras — rather than robust or boisterous community fish. Longevity in good conditions is approximately five years.

Conservation

Iguanodectes geisleri is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded in 2020. The species' broad distribution across three major South American river systems — Madeira, Negro, and Orinoco — provides a buffer against localised threats, and no evidence of significant population decline is documented.

Pressures common to blackwater Amazonian fishes apply broadly: deforestation of riparian and flooded forest, water-quality degradation from agricultural runoff and mining activity, and small-scale collection for the ornamental trade. The species is rare in the aquarium trade (noted by Aquarium Glaser as uncommonly encountered), which limits collecting pressure but also means captive populations are not well established as an insurance buffer. Conservation of intact blackwater stream systems across the Madeira, Negro, and Orinoco drainages remains the primary safeguard for this and many co-occurring species.
