Taxonomy & naming
Iguanodectes adujai was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1970, with the type locality designated as the Rio Adujá, a tributary of the middle Rio Negro in Amazonas state, Brazil. The species name is a toponym directly referencing that collecting site. Géry was among the most prolific describers of small South American characoids in the twentieth century, and Iguanodectes was one of several genera he worked on that occupy the boundary between the larger tetra families and the less well-studied streamline characids.
The genus Iguanodectes itself belongs to the family Iguanodectidae, a small but distinct lineage of South American characiforms. The genus name derives from the Arawak word iwana (lizard) combined with the Greek dektes (biter), a reference to the dentition and possibly to the iguana-like feeding posture observed in the field — animals that use their teeth to scrape algae and organic films from hard surfaces, much as iguanas browse vegetation. Iguanodectes adujai can be distinguished from the closely related I. geisleri by the absence of a black lateral stripe beneath the red one, by the placement of the anal-fin origin beneath (not posterior to) the dorsal-fin base, by the dorsal-fin origin being set further back on the body, and by a notably higher anal-fin ray count of 28–34 versus 20–25 in I. geisleri.
Morphology
Iguanodectes adujai is an elongate, laterally compressed fish with a streamlined, almost fusiform profile adapted to life in flowing water. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2.5 in, although field observations from Venezuelan Amazonas tributaries suggest some populations reach up to 3.5 in total length, possibly reflecting geographic variation or the difference between standard and total length measurements. The body is slender relative to most aquarium tetras, and the fish moves with a characteristic wiggling or undulating motion when holding position against a current.
The colour pattern is the species' most recognisable feature. A vivid pink-to-red lateral stripe runs from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle, where it terminates adjacent to a large black spot; additional red spotting may be visible on the caudal peduncle itself. The fins are yellowish. The body background is pale to beige, and the overall colouration is somewhat variable with condition and surroundings — fish in fast, oxygenated runs may appear more beige, while those in heavily vegetated shallows can show a greener hue. The distinctive lateral stripe, combined with the high anal-fin ray count, is the key field mark separating this species from its congeners.
Habitat
Iguanodectes adujai is recorded from the Negro and Orinoco River basins of South America, spanning parts of northern Brazil and Venezuelan Amazonas. Its preferred environment is small tributary channels, including classic blackwater streams of the Rio Negro system with overhanging riparian vegetation, leaf litter on the substrate, and the highly acidic, tea-stained water characteristic of the region. In Venezuela it also occurs in morichals — gallery forest stream systems associated with the moriche palm (Mauritia flexuosa) — where the water is clearer and the substrate sandy.
Field study has identified at least three distinct microhabitat zones used by this species within a single stream: shallow, heavily planted banks less than 15.5 in deep with moderate to fast current, where fish tend to show their most saturated green-yellow colouration; slower depositional zones with accumulations of rotting debris; and fast, well-oxygenated runs with driftwood shelter, where individuals hover with a characteristic wiggling motion against the flow. This range of microhabitats suggests behavioral flexibility within the stream environment. Water chemistry across the known range is soft and acidic: Seriously Fish documents pH 5.0–7.0, temperatures 68–79 °F (68–79 °F), and hardness 18–90 ppm.
Feeding
Iguanodectes adujai is an omnivore with a pronounced tendency toward algae and organic film grazing, a habit that inspired the genus name. In the field, individuals feed on periphyton and algal growth scraped from submerged branches, roots, and leaf surfaces, along with organic material suspended in the water current. Small invertebrates, crustaceans, and other available micro-prey supplement the plant-based component of the diet.
In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen foods — bloodworm, Daphnia, mosquito larvae, and similar items — along with filamentous algae and small portions of prepared foods. Because algae grazing is a natural foraging mode, a tank with some biofilm growth on hardscape surfaces will be enriching. As with most small characoids, offering variety is preferable to relying on a single food type, and the provision of live or frozen items visibly stimulates natural foraging behavior.
Mating
No detailed observations of courtship behaviour in Iguanodectes adujai have been published in the available literature. Based on the biology of related iguanodectid and characoid species, spawning is presumed to follow the typical open-water egg-scattering pattern, with no parental care and adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved aquatic plants or submerged debris.
In the wild the species forms peaceful schools that shelter among branches, root tangles, and vegetation rather than swimming actively in open water. Males within a school likely display to one another and to females, though the signals involved have not been formally described. The sedentary, hover-and-wiggle behaviour noted in field studies suggests that social interactions are subtle, centred on microhabitat territories within preferred stream zones rather than dramatic open-water chasing.
Breeding
Detailed breeding accounts for Iguanodectes adujai in captivity are sparse in the published literature. Based on the general biology of the genus and the egg-scattering pattern common to characoids, spawning would be expected to occur over fine-leaved plants or among roots and leaf litter, with the female releasing adhesive eggs and no parental care from either adult. As is standard for egg-scattering tetras, adults should be removed after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs.
Given the soft, acidic water parameters of the species' native habitat, a breeding attempt would likely be most productive in conditions approaching those of its origin: soft, slightly acidic water, pH around 5.5–6.5, temperature 75–79 °F (75–79 °F), subdued lighting, and fine-leaved spawning substrate such as java moss or a synthetic spawning mop. Incubation and fry-rearing details specific to this species remain undescribed in accessible sources.
In the aquarium
Iguanodectes adujai is a peaceful, schooling species well suited to a blackwater or soft-water community aquarium. A group of eight to ten individuals is recommended to provide the security needed for the species to behave naturally — single fish or very small groups tend to remain hidden. The aquarium should replicate the cluttered, shaded conditions of its native streams: driftwood, overhanging branches or roots, leaf litter on the substrate, and fine-leaved plants such as java moss. Dark substrate and subdued or diffuse lighting help bring out the contrast of the red stripe against the pale body.
Water chemistry should match the soft, acidic conditions of the Rio Negro and Orinoco tributaries: pH 5.0–7.0, temperature 68–79 °F (68–79 °F), and very low to moderate hardness (18–90 ppm total dissolved solids). The species appreciates gentle but consistent water movement — a powerhead or return outlet positioned to create a mild current gives fish the opportunity to exercise their natural hover-and-drift behaviour. Tankmates should be similarly peaceful and suited to soft, acidic conditions: dwarf cichlids (Apistogramma), small corydoras, other small tetras, or blackwater-adapted gobies are all compatible choices. As a primarily surface-to-midwater fish that also browses hard surfaces, Iguanodectes adujai fills a distinctive ecological niche in a well-designed South American biotope aquarium.
Conservation
Iguanodectes adujai is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting a distribution across two major South American river basins — the Negro and the Orinoco — with no known major range-wide threats identified at the time of assessment. The species' occurrence across this broad area, encompassing some of the least-disturbed freshwater habitats in the world, underpins the low-concern designation.
Nonetheless, specific blackwater tributary habitats in the Amazon and Orinoco drainages face ongoing pressure from land-use change, deforestation, and artisanal gold mining, the last of which introduces mercury contamination and disturbs streambeds. The species' dependence on structurally complex stream habitats with intact riparian vegetation means that local populations can be affected by habitat simplification even where the species remains widespread overall. It does appear in the ornamental fish trade, but there is no evidence that collecting pressure represents a significant threat at the basin scale.
