Iguanodectes spilurus was originally described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1864 from material collected in South America. The species is placed in the genus Iguanodectes, the sole or principal genus within the family Iguanodectidae — a small group of elongate, schooling characiforms distinguished from the broad Characidae by details of their jaw dentition and body form. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Iguanodectes spilurus (Günther, 1864) as the valid name; the parenthetical authority indicates the species was not originally described in its current genus.
The genus Iguanodectes takes its name from a fancied resemblance of its jaw teeth to those of iguanas (Greek: iguana + dektes, 'biter'), reflecting the somewhat procumbent, multicusped dentition that distinguishes it from other small tetras. The family Iguanodectidae is sometimes subsumed within the megafamily Characidae in broader taxonomic treatments, but current molecular and morphological work supports maintaining it as a distinct family-level group. GBIF and FishBase both list the species under Iguanodectidae, consistent with the treatment followed here.
Morphology
Iguanodectes spilurus is a notably slender, torpedo-shaped fish, reaching a maximum of approximately 4 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase, with Seriously Fish citing specimens up to 4 in SL. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with a pointed snout, large eye, and a forked caudal fin that powers a fast-swimming, darting style of locomotion. The profile is more attenuate than most of the small tetras encountered in the hobby, giving the fish a streamlined appearance suited to open-water schooling.
The most distinctive feature is an iridescent lateral stripe — greenish or greenish-gold in good light — that runs from behind the eye to the base of the caudal fin, lending the fish its common name. The body is otherwise silvery, lightly translucent, with fins typically hyaline or faintly pigmented. Sexual dimorphism is mild; females are generally deeper-bodied and heavier, particularly when in spawning condition, but the sexes share the same basic coloration and are not reliably distinguished at a glance.
Habitat
Iguanodectes spilurus is widely distributed across four major South American river systems: the Amazon, Orinoco, Essequibo, and Tocantins basins. Its known range encompasses Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and Guyana — one of the broadest distributions recorded in the family. Within these drainages it occupies lowland, slow to moderately flowing waters, typically in forested settings where leaf litter, submerged roots, and overhanging vegetation provide structure.
Water conditions across this range are predominantly soft and acidic, as is typical of Amazonian blackwater and clearwater streams: FishBase records a temperature range of 73–81 °F and pH 5.0–7.5, while Seriously Fish extends the thermal range to 68–82 °F. Conductivity is low in the core blackwater habitats. The species is found in schools in open water close to cover, and its broad distribution across multiple major drainages at varying elevations suggests some physiological flexibility within the soft, acidic tropical freshwater envelope.
Feeding
Iguanodectes spilurus is an omnivore with a diet weighted toward small animal prey. FishBase characterises it as feeding on small invertebrates, and Seriously Fish provides a more detailed picture: the natural diet includes small invertebrates, crustacea, filamentous algae, and fallen fruit — the allochthonous fruit component is consistent with forested Amazonian habitats where ripe fruit drops into the water seasonally and forms a significant food source for many characids.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and will accept most standard aquarium foods: quality flake and micro-pellets suit it well as a base diet, supplemented with frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, micro-worms, and similar small invertebrate foods. A varied diet maintains condition and brings out the iridescent lateral stripe. Like most active schooling tetras it benefits from multiple small feedings per day rather than one large meal, consistent with its open-water, continuously-foraging lifestyle in nature.
Mating
Iguanodectes spilurus is an egg-scattering species typical of the open-spawning Characiformes: there is no pair bond, no territory, and no parental investment beyond the spawn itself. Males court ripe females with rapid lateral displays and chasing behaviour, and spawning occurs in a brief, energetic rush in which eggs and sperm are released simultaneously into the water column or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation. The adhesive eggs settle among plant material or substrate rather than drifting far.
FishBase notes that the species spawns in intervals — repeating spawning events over time rather than a single massed spawn — which is the typical pattern for tropical characids maintained under stable, warm conditions. In the wild, breeding is likely linked to seasonal cues such as water level, temperature, and photoperiod, which vary across the broad lowland range. Under aquarium conditions with consistent temperature and feeding, conditioning a group of mixed sexes often triggers spontaneous spawning activity.
Breeding
Breeding Iguanodectes spilurus follows the standard template for egg-scattering characids: condition a group of well-fed adults, provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and the fish will spawn with minimal intervention. Eggs are small and adhesive, deposited among vegetation or over the substrate, and the adults offer no care — indeed, they will consume eggs and fry given the chance, so transferring eggs or spawning medium to a separate rearing container is standard practice.
Incubation at typical breeding temperatures (75–81 °F) takes roughly 24–48 hours for most small egg-scattering tetras of similar size, though specific data for this species are sparse in the literature. Newly hatched larvae are tiny and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered prepared foods as they grow. Soft, slightly acidic water for incubation and rearing is advisable given the species' natural habitat preferences. Filtration in the breeding or rearing vessel should be gentle — a sponge filter prevents fry from being drawn into an impeller.
In the aquarium
Iguanodectes spilurus is a peaceful, active schooling fish that does best kept in groups of eight or more. Seriously Fish notes that it associates well with similarly-sized characids; its calm temperament and moderate size (to about 4 in) make it compatible with a wide range of South American community fish — other tetras, small corydoras, small loricariids, and dwarf cichlids. It should not be combined with significantly larger fish that might pursue or intimidate it.
A tank of at least 35.5–39.5 in length gives the school room to move; the species is an active, open-water swimmer that appreciates space. Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.0–7.0, temperature 73–81 °F) replicates the Amazonian conditions it inhabits and will bring it into best colour and condition. Subdued lighting with a dark substrate and background, dense planting around the edges with open swimming space centrally, and the addition of dried leaf litter all suit a blackwater Amazonia biotope approach. The fish is hardy within its preferred parameters and not particularly demanding, but it is not often seen in trade and may require some effort to source compared to common tetra species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Iguanodectes spilurus as Least Concern, with the assessment last updated in 2023 (original assessment 11 September 2020). The evaluation notes the species is widely distributed across the Amazon basin and its tributaries, as well as the Essequibo and Orinoco systems, across seven countries: Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela. No identified threats are recorded in the assessment, and the broad range across multiple large, ecologically intact river systems provides a robust buffer against population declines.
The species is therefore among the more secure of the Iguanodectidae. Its wide distribution across both the Amazon and Orinoco drainages — two of the largest freshwater systems on Earth — means that even significant localised habitat change in one part of the range would not threaten the species overall. Routine monitoring of Amazonian fish diversity continues through GBIF and research collections, and any major shifts in the range or population trend would likely be detected through ongoing ichthyological surveys of these heavily studied river systems.
