Iguanodectes variatus is a slender, active characid from the Amazon basin of Brazil, recognised from the Guaporé, Madeira, Branco, Trombetas, and Urubu river drainages. Reaching around 4 in in standard length, it is one of the larger members of the small, distinctive genus Iguanodectes — torpedo-shaped tetras that carry a lizard-biter name rooted in the diet observations of their earliest collectors. The species was described by Jacques Géry in 1993 and remains modestly known in the hobby, but its quiet colours and active schooling behaviour make it an appealing choice for a large, well-planted Amazonian biotope aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Iguanodectes variatus was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1993. The type locality is Igarapé Jatuarana, 3 mi above the town of Samuel on the Rio Guaporé in the state of Rondônia, Brazil. The valid name as listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Iguanodectes variatus Géry, 1993.

The genus Iguanodectes belongs to the family Iguanodectidae (formerly treated as a subfamily of Characidae) and currently contains fewer than ten species. It is placed among the basal lineages of the large Neotropical characiform radiation. The species epithet variatus derives from the Latin for 'diversified' or 'variegated,' an allusion to the variable or mottled colour pattern that distinguishes this species within the genus.

The genus name Iguanodectes combines the Taino word iwana, meaning lizard, with the Greek déktés, meaning biter — a reference to early accounts of these fish nipping at larger animals, possibly lizards, entering the water. The compound thus translates loosely as 'lizard-biter,' a vivid if not entirely literal label for a small characid.

Morphology

Iguanodectes variatus is a slender, fusiform tetra with a streamlined body typical of the genus. It reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4 in, making it one of the larger Iguanodectes species. The body is laterally compressed but not deep, the snout pointed, and the fins relatively small — an overall form built for sustained, mid-water swimming in flowing reaches.

The colour pattern is pale to silvery overall, with a lateral stripe or series of markings along the flank that gives the species its 'variegated' name. Like most Iguanodectes, the fish lacks the bold colour blocks of more popular tetras, relying instead on metallic sheen and pattern contrast that is best appreciated in a well-lit tank against a dark background. Habitat

The species occurs within the Amazon basin of Brazil, with confirmed records from the Guaporé, Madeira, Branco, Trombetas, and Urubu river systems. The type locality, Igarapé Jatuarana on the Rio Guaporé, is a small tributary stream in Rondônia, a state that straddles the transition between upland Cerrado and lowland Amazonian forest.

Iguanodectes generally inhabit soft, acidic, low-conductivity blackwater and clearwater streams and rivers — the classic Amazonian 'tetra habitat' of leaf litter, submerged roots, overhanging vegetation, and tannin-stained water. Water parameters for such environments typically involve temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F and pH between 5.5 and 7.0, reflecting the poorly buffered, ion-poor conditions characteristic of these drainages. The species is classified as benthopelagic and freshwater-tropical by FishBase.

Feeding

Iguanodectes variatus is presumed to be an omnivore in the manner of most small Amazonian characids, feeding on small invertebrates, insects, and plant or organic matter taken from the mid-water column and near the surface. The genus name's reference to 'lizard-biting' suggests that some members of Iguanodectes may opportunistically take larger prey, though in practice aquarium-kept fish show typical small-tetra feeding behaviour.

In the aquarium the species accepts a variety of prepared foods including quality flakes and micro-pellets, as well as frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Regular offerings of live or frozen invertebrates support good condition and natural colouration. As an active, mid-water schooling fish it competes well at feeding time when kept in a suitable group.

Mating

No dedicated behavioural studies of Iguanodectes variatus courtship are available in the accessible literature. Like other members of its family and the broader Amazonian characiform fauna, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care.

Males likely display to females with rapid swimming and lateral body presentations in the manner common to small characids. Spawning is expected to occur among fine-leaved vegetation or over substrate, where adhesive eggs are deposited and immediately abandoned. As with most tetras, both males and females may prey on their own eggs if left together after spawning.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Iguanodectes variatus has not been widely documented in the hobby literature, and the species is uncommon in the trade. Based on the biology of close relatives and the general Amazonian characid model, breeding in captivity would follow the standard egg-scattering protocol: a conditioning period on live and frozen foods, a well-planted spawning tank with soft acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, temperature around 79 °F), and separation of adults after spawning to protect the eggs.

Eggs would be expected to be adhesive or semi-adhesive, scattered among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and hatching within 24–48 hours at suitable temperatures. Fry would require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the species' relative rarity in captivity, any successful breeding should be considered a noteworthy husbandry achievement.

In the aquarium

Iguanodectes variatus is best maintained as a school of six or more individuals in a spacious aquarium of at least 39.5 in in length, given its active swimming habit and maximum size of around 4 in. A biotope-style setup reflecting its Amazonian origins — tannin-stained water, driftwood, dried leaf litter, and fine-leaved or floating plants — suits the species well and helps bring out its natural colouration and behaviour.

Water chemistry should be soft and slightly acidic: pH 5.5–7.0, low hardness, and temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F. Good filtration providing a gentle current is appropriate, but avoid strong turbulence. Tankmates should be peaceful, similarly sized Amazonian species that share the same water requirements — pencilfish, smaller cichlids, other tetras, and Corydoras are all reasonable companions. The species is rarely seen in the trade; most stock, when available, will be wild-caught, so acclimatisation to aquarium water should be gradual.

Conservation

Iguanodectes variatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 7 November 2018. The species has a broad distribution across multiple Amazon basin river systems in Brazil — Guaporé, Madeira, Branco, Trombetas, and Urubu — which provides some resilience against localised habitat loss.

The Brazilian Amazon faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and hydroelectric development that affect water quality and stream hydrology across the region. The Rio Guaporé basin, which includes the type locality, has experienced significant land-use change. While none of these pressures appear to have driven range-wide declines sufficient to change the species' Red List status at last assessment, continued monitoring of Amazonian freshwater fish communities remains important as development pressures intensify.
