The genus Knodus belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae within the family Characidae, a large and taxonomically complex group of New World characins that has undergone repeated revision as molecular and morphological work clarifies internal relationships.

Knodus is a genus of small, schooling characids distributed broadly across lowland South American river systems, from the Amazon and Orinoco basins into the Guiana Shield drainages. The genus was historically used as something of a catch-all for small, plain-bodied stevardiin characins, and its boundaries have shifted with successive revisions; several former Knodus species have been moved to other genera, and the genus's monophyly has been questioned. Morphology

Knodus heteresthes is a small, elongate characid with the typical Knodus body plan: a relatively slender, laterally compressed form, a blunt snout, a small terminal mouth, and the characid's diagnostic adipose fin between dorsal and caudal. Precise published measurements for this species are not widely available in accessible literature, but members of the genus typically reach 1.5–2.5 in standard length as adults, and K. heteresthes is not reported as exceptional in this regard.

Coloration in life is understated. The body is silvery, often with a faint lateral stripe or a diffuse darker band running from behind the operculum toward the caudal peduncle, where it may intensify into a small caudal spot. The fins are generally clear to faintly pigmented. Preserved specimens used in the original description may show slightly different pigment patterns than live fish. In the aquarium

Knodus heteresthes is essentially absent from the hobby; it does not appear in the trade under its own name and is unlikely to be encountered except as an occasional bycatch in wild-collected mixed shipments of small South American tetras. As a result, no established aquarium-keeping guidelines exist specifically for this species.

Its presumed requirements, drawn from the biology of congeners and the broader Stevardiinae, suggest a small, peaceful schooling fish that would do well in a planted aquarium of moderate size, kept in a group of six or more with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water in the low-to-mid tropical temperature range would approximate conditions in its native range. Good water quality and a varied diet would be the main requirements.
