Moenkhausia shideleri is a small characid tetra from Guyana, reaching around 3 in standard length, that was collected during Carl Eigenmann's landmark 1908 expedition to the Guiana Highlands. Modest in colour compared with the showier members of its genus, it nonetheless represents a cleanly documented species tied to a specific collector and moment in ichthyological history — the epithet honours S. Moenkhausia shideleri was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909, based on material collected during his 1908 expedition to British Guiana (present-day Guyana). The valid name as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Moenkhausia shideleri Eigenmann, 1909.

The genus Moenkhausia was established to accommodate a large radiation of small to medium-sized characids in South America; the genus name honours Dr William J. Moenkhaus (1871–1947), an American geneticist and ichthyologist at Indiana University who was a contemporary and collaborator of Eigenmann. The specific epithet shideleri commemorates S. E. Shideler, a volunteer assistant during Eigenmann's 1908 Guyana expedition who collected the holotype, making this one of the many Eigenmann species named for contributors to his field parties.
