Taxonomy & naming
Leptagoniates steindachneri was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1887. Boulenger, working from material held at the Natural History Museum in London, erected both the genus Leptagoniates and this species in the same publication. The genus name and species epithet together capture the two defining features of the animal and honour a fellow ichthyologist of the era. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name; the binomial Leptagoniates steindachneri Boulenger, 1887 remains in use.
Leptagoniates is placed within the large, heterogeneous family Characidae, the characins, which encompasses the majority of South American tetras. The genus has been treated as monotypic for much of its history, making L. steindachneri both the type species and, in most treatments, the sole representative of its lineage. Its internal relationships within Characidae remain an area of ongoing systematic study, reflecting the broader challenges of resolving phylogenetic affinities among the hundreds of small Amazonian characins.
Morphology
Leptagoniates steindachneri is a slender, laterally compressed tetra reaching approximately 3 in standard length. The body is notably elongated relative to many Characidae, giving the fish a somewhat pencil-like profile in comparison with deeper-bodied relatives. The overall appearance is semi-transparent, with the silvery flanks showing the internal organs clearly in live specimens under good lighting.
As is typical in small characins, the species possesses an adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and a modest lateral line. Habitat

Feeding

When available, it should be kept in a group of six or more individuals to reflect its schooling lifestyle and reduce stress; small tetras kept singly or in pairs rarely thrive.
Water chemistry should follow the species' Amazonian origins: soft, slightly acidic water with pH in the range of 5.5–7.0, low hardness, and temperatures of 75–82 °F (75–82 °F). A biotope-style setup with tannin-stained water, dark substrate, subdued lighting, and driftwood or dried leaf litter suits the fish well and shows its transparency and silver sheen to best effect. Gentle filtration and good water quality are important for softwater species sensitive to dissolved waste. Tankmates should be peaceful and similarly sized; other small Amazonian tetras, pencilfish, and small corydoras make suitable companions.
