Taxonomy & naming
Micralestes fodori was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Hubert Matthes in 1965. The holotype, MRAC 140901, was collected from Lake Fwa in the Sankuru drainage of the middle Congo River basin, Democratic Republic of Congo (then the Belgian Congo). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Micralestes fodori Matthes, 1965, placed within the family Alestidae, subfamily Alestinae. Because the species was described in Micralestes, where it remains today, no parenthetical authority is used.
Micralestes is a genus of small African tetras distributed across the Congo and adjacent river systems. Most species are slender, fast-moving open-water fishes that can be difficult to distinguish by external morphology alone; the genus has been subject to periodic revision as molecular data and closer examination of meristic characters have refined species boundaries. M. fodori remains poorly known outside its type locality, and relatively little material has been examined compared with more widespread congeners.
Morphology
Micralestes fodori is a small, slender tetra with a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. This places it among the smaller members of its genus, consistent with the diminutive scale implied by the generic name Micralestes. As a pelagic freshwater species, it is presumed to have the elongate, laterally compressed body form typical of open-water alestid tetras: a streamlined profile suited to continuous swimming in the water column, small but well-developed fins, and a terminal or slightly upturned mouth.
Detailed meristic and morphometric data for M. fodori are sparse in the accessible literature beyond the original description material. Colour in life is not well documented from field observations; most small Micralestes are silvery with a lateral stripe or reflective flank band, but specific colouration for this species cannot be confirmed from the available sources.
Habitat
Micralestes fodori is endemic to Lake Fwa, a freshwater lake in the Sankuru River drainage within the middle Congo River basin, Democratic Republic of Congo. FishBase records the species as a freshwater pelagic fish, indicating it occupies the open water column rather than benthic or heavily vegetated marginal zones. Lake Fwa lies within the Congo lowlands, a region characterised by warm, soft, slightly acidic to neutral blackwater and clearwater systems.
The Sankuru drainage drains a broad area of equatorial forest and connects to the Congo River system. Like other Congo basin endemics, M. fodori exists within a hydrological network of extraordinary biodiversity. Its restriction to a single lake makes its ecology and any habitat perturbations there particularly significant for the species' persistence.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study of Micralestes fodori has been published in the accessible literature. Based on the ecology and feeding habits of the genus generally, M. fodori is expected to be a pelagic micro-predator and omnivore, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton — in the open water column, supplemented opportunistically by surface insects and fine particulate organic matter.
In the aquarium, congeneric Micralestes species accept live and frozen micro-foods such as Daphnia, newly hatched brine shrimp, and small bloodworm, as well as finely crushed flake and micro-pellets. Given M. fodori's very small adult size of 1.5 in SL, food particle size is an important consideration; foods appropriate for nano-scale tetras apply here.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been specifically documented for Micralestes fodori. By analogy with other small alestid tetras, the species is likely an egg-scatterer that spawns in the open water column or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, releasing small, semi-adhesive or non-adhesive eggs with no subsequent parental care. Sexual dimorphism, if present, is not described in the available sources; in many small Micralestes species it is subtle, with gravid females appearing slightly deeper-bodied prior to spawning.
Breeding triggers in the natural habitat are unknown but probably relate to seasonal cues — changes in rainfall, water temperature, and day length — common to Congo basin fishes. No courtship behaviour has been described in the literature for this species.
Breeding
There are no published accounts of Micralestes fodori being bred in captivity, and the species is not established in the ornamental trade. Based on the general biology of small African tetras in the subfamily Alestinae, breeding would be expected to follow the typical egg-scattering pattern: spawning over fine-leaved plants or open substrate, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that receive no parental attention and that hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures.
Fry would be expected to be small at hatching and require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. The species' very small adult size — 1.5 in SL — suggests that fry size at hatching is correspondingly tiny. Without captive breeding records or hobby literature to draw on, these details remain inferential.
In the aquarium
Micralestes fodori is not established in the aquarium hobby and is not commercially available. The species is known almost entirely from its type locality, Lake Fwa, and has not entered the ornamental trade in any documented way. Aquarium husbandry notes are therefore not available.
Were it to become available, care requirements would likely align with other small Congo basin tetras: warm soft-to-moderately-hard water in the 75–82 °F range, a well-planted or open-water aquarium, small live and frozen foods appropriate for a fish of under 1.5 in SL, and the company of similarly sized peaceful species. As a pelagic fish it would benefit from open swimming space and a school of conspecifics.
Conservation
Micralestes fodori is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment). Despite its highly restricted range — confined to Lake Fwa in the Sankuru drainage of the DRC — the species does not currently meet the thresholds for a threatened category under the criteria applied at the time of assessment.
The Congo basin as a whole faces escalating pressures from deforestation, artisanal and commercial fishing, and infrastructure development, and highly localised endemics like M. fodori could be vulnerable to localised habitat degradation even if not currently in decline. The species is data-sparse: very little is known about its population size, habitat requirements, or the degree to which Lake Fwa's ecosystem remains intact. Ongoing monitoring of Congo basin lake endemics remains important for detecting early-stage declines before they become irreversible.
