Taxonomy & naming
Brachyalestes fwaensis was described by Jacques Géry in 1995. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) recognises the name as valid, with its placement in Brachyalestes confirmed by subsequent revisionary work including Stiassny et al. 2023. The parenthetical authority notation reflects the fact that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Brachyalestes.
Brachyalestes is a genus within the family Alestidae, the African tetras, a group of characiform fishes distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. Members of the genus are generally elongated, silver-bodied schooling fishes inhabiting open and vegetated zones of rivers and lake margins. Brachyalestes fwaensis is currently known only from its type locality, making it one of the narrower-range species within the genus.
Morphology
Brachyalestes fwaensis is a small, slender alestid reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length — notably compact even within a genus of relatively modest-sized species. Like other members of Alestidae it has the characteristic compressed, fusiform body plan suited to life in open and structured aquatic habitats, with the typical characiform adipose fin and a forked tail.

The species is known exclusively from Lake Fwa, a lake situated within the Sankuru drainage of the middle Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lake Fwa is a relatively small, enclosed lake system, and this restricted distribution makes Brachyalestes fwaensis one of the few lacustrine endemics within a genus otherwise predominantly associated with river systems.
Within Lake Fwa, the species occupies pelagic zones as well as areas with aquatic vegetation. FishBase records water conditions of approximately 68 °F and pH 6.5, consistent with the soft, slightly acidic blackwater character found across much of the Congo basin. Breeding is associated with shallow vegetated margins, suggesting seasonal or habitat-driven movement between open water and marginal zones.

It would be categorised as a species of scientific interest rather than a practical aquarium subject given current availability.
Conservation
Brachyalestes fwaensis has not received a formal assessment on the IUCN Red List as a named species; FishBase carries the status as Least Concern, derived from its apparent persistence within its lake habitat. However, endemism to a single lake system in the Congo basin — a region subject to ongoing habitat pressure from subsistence fishing, deforestation in catchment areas, and regional instability — means that any population-level threat to Lake Fwa would directly threaten the entire known range of the species.
