Micralestes humilis was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1899 and placed in the family Alestidae, the African tetras — a group of characiform fishes restricted to sub-Saharan Africa. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Micralestes humilis Boulenger, 1899.
The genus Micralestes is a moderately diverse African alestid genus. It shares its wider family with the Congo tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) and the larger predatory tigerfish (Hydrocynus spp.), though Micralestes itself remains a small, slender form. The species has sometimes been associated in the trade with the closely related Micralestes stormsi, and Aquarium Glaser has at times supplied both under a combined notation, reflecting the difficulty of distinguishing the two in the field without close examination.
Morphology
