Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) maintains the valid name as Moenkhausia lata Eigenmann, 1908; because the species was described directly in Moenkhausia, no parenthetical authority is used.

Moenkhausia is one of the largest genera in the family Characidae, encompassing well over a hundred described species distributed broadly across South American freshwaters. The genus is united by a combination of characters including a complete lateral line and the presence of scales on the caudal fin base, but individual species must be diagnosed on meristic and morphometric grounds. Phylogenetic work on the tetragonopterine and broader characid radiation continues to refine generic boundaries, but M. lata has remained in Moenkhausia under current taxonomy.

Like other Moenkhausia, it has the typical characin body plan: laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied, with a forked tail and the family's distinctive adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal. Detailed meristic and colour data specific to M. lata are sparse in the hobbyist literature; the species has not been as thoroughly documented in aquarium sources as more frequently traded Moenkhausia such as M. sanctaefilomenae or M. pittieri.

Based on its placement in Moenkhausia and the general pattern of the genus, individuals likely display silvery flanks with variable dark or iridescent markings, though species-specific patterning would require reference to the original type description for precise detail. Habitat

Moenkhausia lata is recorded from the Tapajós River basin and the Oyapock (Oiapoque) River basin in South America. The Tapajós is a major southern tributary of the Amazon in Brazil, draining a vast area of the Brazilian Shield, while the Oyapock flows along the border of Brazil and French Guiana before emptying into the Atlantic.
