Taxonomy & naming
Paragoniates alburnus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1876 in the series Ichthyologische Beiträge, published in the Sitzungsberichte der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) lists the valid name as Paragoniates alburnus Steindachner, 1876 and places the species within the family Characidae, subfamily Aphyocharacinae. Paragoniates is a monotypic genus — P. alburnus is its only member and its type species.
The genus name Paragoniates alludes to the angled or faceted appearance common to characids with prominent scales; the specific epithet alburnus is a Latin word meaning 'white' or 'whitish', a reference to the fish's pale, silvery-translucent coloration. Because the species was described directly into Paragoniates and has remained there, no parenthetical authority is needed in the binomial. Placement within Aphyocharacinae groups it with a number of small, schooling characins of similar form and habit from the Amazon and Orinoco systems.
Morphology
Paragoniates alburnus is a small, elongate, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum of around 2.5 in standard length. The body is slender and streamlined with large, reflective scales that give the fish a glass-like, translucent quality; iridescent blue or silver highlights along the flanks have earned it the trade name 'blue glass tetra'. Like most Aphyocharacinae the head is small and pointed, and the large eyes are a notable feature relative to head size.
The fins are generally uncoloured to lightly pigmented, and there is no pronounced lateral stripe or bold patterning; the primary visual impression is one of translucency and delicate scale iridescence. Sexual dimorphism is subtle at best: females may be slightly deeper-bodied and fuller in the abdomen when gravid, but the sexes are otherwise difficult to distinguish at a glance. There is no obvious adipose fin coloration or fin extension reported for the species.
Habitat
Paragoniates alburnus is a freshwater demersal and mid-water species of the lowland Amazon basin and the Orinoco system. Confirmed occurrence records span Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela (including the Rio Meta and Rio Negro drainages), Colombia, and Ecuador — a wide distribution across much of the western and northern Amazon plus the Orinoco lowlands, as documented in museum collection records held by iNaturalist and other biodiversity databases.
FishBase records the species from warm tropical lowland waters in the temperature range of 73–81 °F; hobbyist sources extend the tolerated range slightly to roughly 72–82 °F. It inhabits soft to moderately hard freshwater systems typical of Amazonian floodplain and clearwater rivers, where fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged structure, and open mid-water zones are all available. As a schooling fish it is presumably found in aggregations in the middle and upper water column in the wild.
Feeding
Paragoniates alburnus is an omnivore. Based on its size and the habitats it occupies, the natural diet is presumed to include small insects, invertebrate larvae, small crustaceans, and plant material — the broad diet range typical of small Amazonian characins. Hobbyist sources confirm this omnivorous tendency and note that the fish accepts a variety of aquarium foods.
In captivity it readily takes good-quality flake or micro-pellet foods as a staple, supplemented by small frozen or live invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and mosquito larvae. Varied feeding promotes better condition and coloration. As with most small schooling tetras, offering food several times daily in small portions is preferable to a single large feeding.
Mating
No detailed field observations of courtship in Paragoniates alburnus have been published. Based on its classification within Aphyocharacinae and its general characid biology, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, as is typical for small schooling tetras. Conditioning groups of fish with high-quality live and frozen foods and providing fine-leaved plants or spawning mops is the standard approach for triggering spawning in the aquarium.
Hobbyist sources describe males as peaceful and gregarious, suggesting that group dynamics rather than strong territorial aggression govern reproduction. Spawning activity is generally most likely during early morning hours under suitable conditions, a pattern common across egg-scattering characins.
Breeding
Hobbyist accounts note an unusual breeding behaviour for Paragoniates alburnus: males are reported to construct nests by digging in fine substrate (mud or sand), which would be atypical for most small Aphyocharacinae and merits confirmation through observation. If substrate-nest construction is confirmed, it would distinguish this species from the purely egg-scattering mode assumed for most of its relatives.
Assuming the egg-scattering pattern as a baseline: spawning would occur over fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops, eggs would be adhesive or semi-adhesive, and hatching would occur within a few days at warm temperatures (around 77–81 °F). Fry would be tiny at hatching and require infusoria or liquid fry food as first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Adults do not provide parental care and should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Published breeding reports for this species in the scientific or specialist literature are sparse.
In the aquarium
Paragoniates alburnus is kept as a peaceful, gregarious schooling fish. It should be maintained in a group of at least six individuals, and larger schools of eight to twelve or more show the most natural behaviour and appear most comfortable. A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space suits the species; the translucent coloration is best shown against a dark substrate and background.
Reported water parameters for keeping the species are: temperature 72–82 °F, pH 6.9–7.2, in moderately soft water consistent with Amazonian conditions. Good filtration and stable water quality are important, as with all small characins. Compatible tankmates include other small peaceful characins, small rasboras, and similarly sized non-aggressive fish. It is not a species encountered frequently in the trade and may require some searching; when available it is generally regarded as undemanding in appropriately set-up tanks.
Conservation
Paragoniates alburnus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; the species appears not to have been evaluated and carries no current listing. No assessment year or criteria are on record. The species' wide distribution across the Amazon basin and Orinoco system — spanning Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela — suggests that it is not under immediate large-scale threat, though this inference cannot substitute for a formal assessment.
Local threats applicable to Amazonian fish generally — including deforestation-driven habitat degradation, water quality changes, and artisanal and ornamental collection pressure — may affect populations in parts of the range. Continued monitoring and a formal IUCN evaluation would be valuable, particularly as Amazonian fish fauna faces increasing pressure from land-use change across the basin.
