Phenacogaster apletostigma is a small characid from the igarapés and marginal channels of the Araguari River system in the Brazilian state of Amapá, described in 2007 by Lucena and Gama on the basis of material collected from the flooded forest-edge streams of the Santo Antônio channel. It is distinguished from all other members of the genus Phenacogaster by a uniquely large, vertically elongate humeral blotch that extends from the lateral line nearly to the dorsal surface and bears a distinct anterodorsal extension — a combination seen in no other species of the group.

Taxonomy & naming

Phenacogaster apletostigma was described by Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena and Wilson Sebastião Gama in a 2007 paper published in Revista Brasileira de Zoologia (volume 24, issue 1, pages 151–156). The type locality is the Santo Antônio channel and adjacent igarapés (small seasonal forest streams) of the Araguari River drainage in Amapá, northern Brazil. The holotype measures 1.5 in standard length; paratypes range from 1–1.5 in SL.

The genus Phenacogaster belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics. Phenacogaster species are small, laterally compressed characids widely distributed in South American river basins. The valid name as listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Phenacogaster apletostigma Lucena & Gama, 2007.

The specific epithet apletostigma is derived from the Greek apletos (large, ample) and stigma (mark or spot), referring directly to the oversized humeral blotch that defines the species and distinguishes it from all congeners — an unusual case where the autapomorphy is encoded in the name itself.

Morphology

Phenacogaster apletostigma is a small, laterally compressed characid. The holotype reaches 1.5 in standard length; paratypes measured 1–1.5 in SL, placing the species comfortably within the small-tetra size range typical of the genus.

The defining character of the species is its humeral blotch: a large, vertically elongate dark mark that extends from just above the lateral line nearly to the dorsum, and bears an anterodorsal extension projecting toward the head. This configuration is the autapomorphy — the single character state unique to P. apletostigma among all described Phenacogaster — noted explicitly by the authors of the original description. No other species in the genus shows this blotch shape in combination.

Sexual dimorphism is present. Males bear small retrograde hooks on the rays of the anal, pelvic, and pectoral fins, a widespread secondary character among characid males. Females are deeper-bodied and show darker expression of the humeral markings along the lateral line. Beyond these differences, the species shares the general Phenacogaster body plan: a slender to moderately deep profile, a terminal mouth, and the adipose fin characteristic of most characids.

Habitat

The type locality lies within the Araguari River drainage of Amapá state, in the far north of Brazil. The Araguari drains approximately 38,0 mi² and flows through a landscape of rocky outcrops, lowland forest, and floodplains before reaching the Atlantic. The Santo Antônio channel and the igarapés where specimens were collected represent the marginal, slow-water habitats typical of small Neotropical characids: river margins with reduced current, substrates of leaf litter, and dense marginal vegetation.

Water chemistry recorded at the type locality reflects the blackwater character common to Amazonian forest streams: temperature 76 °F and an acidic pH of 5.17. The igarapés where the species was collected are seasonal, reaching a maximum depth of only about 2 ft during the December–July inundation period. This strongly seasonal hydrology — with habitats expanding into flooded forest during high water and contracting to narrow channels or isolated pools in the dry season — is typical of the igarapé ichthyofauna of the Guiana Shield margin.

The broader Araguari system supports a diverse fish fauna including Acestrorhynchus, Hemiodus, Hoplias, and Myloplus, alongside the smaller characids of flooded-margin habitats. The river has experienced anthropogenic pressure from a series of hydroelectric dams (Coaracy Nunes, Ferreira Gomes, and Cachoeira Caldeirão) whose effects on flow regimes, turbidity, and connectivity are ongoing concerns for the fish communities of the drainage.

Feeding

No published data on the diet of Phenacogaster apletostigma specifically is available. Based on the foraging ecology of the genus and the habitat context — marginal igarapés with leaf-litter substrates and dense vegetation — the species is most likely a micropredator consuming small invertebrates: insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other aquatic invertebrates associated with leaf litter and the benthos of slow, shallow forest streams.

Congeners in the genus Phenacogaster are similarly small micropredators. Husbandry notes for the closely related Phenacogaster tegatus indicate a diet of small live and frozen invertebrates in captivity, including brine shrimp nauplii and grindal worms, which provides a reasonable proxy for the appetite and prey size of P. apletostigma.

Mating

No published observations of mating behaviour in Phenacogaster apletostigma are on record. The genus belongs to the broad egg-scattering clade of characids, and spawning is expected to follow the typical open-water or plant-associated scatter-spawning pattern: males court females with lateral displays, and the pair release eggs and sperm in open water or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or leaf litter, with no subsequent parental care.

The presence of fin hooks on males — small retrograde projections on the anal, pelvic, and pectoral fin rays documented in the original description — is a secondary sexual character interpreted in characids as facilitating close contact with the female during the spawning act, likely improving fertilisation success. Females of the species are noted to be deeper-bodied, a common indicator of egg-bearing condition seen across the family.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Phenacogaster apletostigma has not been documented in the published literature or the mainstream hobby. As with other small Neotropical characids from soft, acidic lowland streams, the species would be expected to spawn over fine-leaved vegetation or into leaf litter, depositing small adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that receive no parental attention. Water matching the type-locality chemistry — warm (around 75–79 °F), soft, and acidic (pH around 5.0–6.5) — would likely be the appropriate conditioning environment.

The seasonal hydrology of its igarapé habitat, where water levels rise dramatically during the December–July flood pulse, suggests that spawning may be triggered in part by rising water levels and the availability of flooded vegetation, a pattern well documented for other igarapé-associated characids. In practice the species is essentially unknown in the trade, and no specific breeding protocols have been established.

In the aquarium

Phenacogaster apletostigma is essentially absent from the hobby. No common name has been established, and no commercial captive-breeding programme is known. Its obscurity reflects both its remote type locality in Amapá and its description in a 2007 systematic paper rather than a hobbyist context.

For aquarists who do obtain the species, genus-level care guidance from the better-known Phenacogaster tegatus offers the closest proxy. That species is kept successfully in well-planted aquaria at 68–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and moderate softness, in groups of eight or more individuals; it is treated as a micropredator accepting small live and frozen invertebrates alongside prepared foods. Given the type-locality water chemistry of P. apletostigma (76 °F, pH 5.17), a soft, acidic setup at the warmer end of that range — with abundant fine-leaved cover and a dark substrate of leaf litter — would be more consistent with the natural habitat and is the recommended starting point for anyone working with this species.

Conservation

Phenacogaster apletostigma has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and currently carries no conservation status. The IUCN category is Not Evaluated (NE).

The species is known only from the Santo Antônio channel and seasonal igarapés of the Araguari River system in Amapá. Although the Araguari drainage is a large basin, the seasonal, shallow-water igarapé habitat that the species occupies is inherently patchy and vulnerable. The Araguari River has been heavily modified by hydroelectric infrastructure — the Coaracy Nunes, Ferreira Gomes, and Cachoeira Caldeirão dams alter downstream flow regimes, connectivity between seasonal habitats, and turbidity in ways that may affect small, seasonally dependent fish. Deforestation of riparian zones also threatens the leaf-litter and shaded-canopy conditions on which igarapé fish communities depend.

Given its narrow known range, specialised habitat, and the documented anthropogenic pressures on its river system, a formal IUCN assessment would be warranted. Until such an evaluation is completed, the species should be treated as potentially vulnerable to localised habitat loss.
