Phenacogaster calverti is a small characid tetra endemic to the coastal river drainages of northeastern Brazil, where it inhabits the freshwaters of Ceará and Paraíba states. First described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1941 and named in honour of the American entomologist Philip P. Calvert, this benthopelagic species reaches around 2.5 in standard length in males and occupies warm, near-neutral to slightly alkaline tropical waters. It remains unstudied by the IUCN and largely unknown in the aquarium hobby, representing one of many small Phenacogaster species awaiting closer scientific attention.

Taxonomy & naming

Phenacogaster calverti was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1941. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) records the valid name with a parenthetical authority — (Fowler, 1941) — indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus and subsequently transferred to Phenacogaster. The genus Phenacogaster is a member of the diverse family Characidae and comprises a number of small, slender tetras distributed across South American coastal and inland river systems.

The species epithet calverti honours Philip Powell Calvert (1871–1961), an entomologist at the University of Pennsylvania who was particularly celebrated for his extensive research on Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies). The ETYFish Project confirms this etymology. The honouring of an odonatologist in the name of a fish underscores the collegial naming traditions common in early twentieth-century North American natural history, where Fowler named species after distinguished contemporaries regardless of their own taxon. The genus name Phenacogaster combines Greek roots meaning 'deceptive' or 'deceiving' (phenax) and 'belly' or 'stomach' (gaster), a reference to anatomical features used in the original generic diagnosis.
