Phenacogaster capitulata is a small, large-eyed characid from the Neshuya River basin in the Ucayali drainage of Peru — a delicate, pencil-slim fish barely reaching 1 in that drifts through dim forest streams in shoals and rewards attentive keepers with orange-tinged fins and a quietly intricate beauty. Its genus Phenacogaster is one of the more diverse small-tetra lineages in the Amazon basin, described from museum material assembled across a century of exploration, and capitulata itself was formally named only in 2010 — the name later corrected from the original masculine ending to the feminine form capitulata — leaving it as a species still largely unknown to science in terms of its ecology, physiology, and conservation standing.

Taxonomy & naming

Phenacogaster capitulata was originally described by Carlos A. S. Lucena and Luiz R. Malabarba in 2010 as part of a comprehensive revision of the genus Phenacogaster, published in the journal Zoologia under the title 'Descrição de nove espécies novas de Phenacogaster (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Characidae) e comentários sobre as demais espécies do gênero' (vol. 27, no. 2, pp. 263–304). The species was originally coined as the masculine capitulatus, but mandatory gender agreement under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature required correction to the feminine capitulata in 2016, since Phenacogaster is feminine.

The type locality is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) as the Rio Neshuya, within the Rio Ucayali system, Coronel Portillo Province, Ucayali Department, Peru. The genus Phenacogaster belongs to the family Characidae — the vast, heterogeneous family that includes the majority of South American small characins — and is placed within the subfamily Stevardiinae by most recent treatments. The genus contains roughly 20 accepted species, most described from preserved specimens and known primarily from museum collections rather than from extensive fieldwork.

Hobbyist material from Peru circulates under the name Phenacogaster cf. capitulata rather than a confirmed identification, because several closely related Phenacogaster species described in the same 2010 revision overlap in distribution and are difficult to separate without microscopic examination of the holotype series.

Morphology

Phenacogaster capitulata is a very small, slender-bodied characid reaching approximately 1 in total length, placing it among the smallest members of its genus. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with a relatively large eye — a trait common in the genus and suggestive of life in low-light conditions. The overall impression is of a transparent to lightly pigmented fish with a pale lateral stripe and a dark spot or smudge at the base of the caudal fin, typical of the genus's conservative body plan.

Displaying males develop orange-tinged fins, and the dorsal fin tip may show a white accent. The adipose fin is present, as is standard in Characidae. Because the genus is known primarily from preserved specimens, colour data in live fish comes mainly from aquarium observations; the precise meristic counts (lateral-line scales, dorsal-fin rays, etc.) that define capitulata and distinguish it from sister species are described in the original Lucena & Malabarba monograph and are not easily assessed by the naked eye in a home aquarium setting.

Habitat

The type locality is the Rio Neshuya, a tributary system of the Rio Ucayali in Coronel Portillo Province, Ucayali Department, Peru. The Ucayali is one of the principal headwater tributaries of the Amazon, draining the central Peruvian lowlands and foothills east of the Andes. Phenacogaster species in this part of Amazonia typically inhabit small, shaded forest streams and flooded forest margins with clear to lightly tea-stained water, soft substrates, and overhanging riparian vegetation that limits surface light.

The large eye noted in aquarium specimens of Phenacogaster cf. capitulata is consistent with a preference for dim conditions, and hobbyist keepers have reported that fish kept in tanks with dark substrates and reduced lighting show more natural behaviour and less stress. Precise water-chemistry data (temperature, pH, conductivity) for the Rio Neshuya are not available in the published literature, but the broader Ucayali lowlands are characterised by warm (75–82 °F), soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral waters typical of Amazonian forest streams.

Feeding

No specific dietary study of Phenacogaster capitulata exists in the literature. Based on the feeding ecology of the genus and family broadly, the species is presumed to be a micropredator and microinvertebrate feeder in the wild — taking small insects, zooplankton, and similar invertebrate prey from the water column and surface film in the dim, forested streams it inhabits.

In the aquarium, hobbyist sources confirm the species is undemanding and accepts a general small-particle diet including quality micro-pellets, finely crushed flake, and small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and baby brine shrimp. A varied diet with a live or frozen component appears to improve colouration, particularly the orange fin pigmentation of displaying males.

Mating

No published spawning study exists for Phenacogaster capitulata specifically. As a member of Characidae in the broadly defined sense — a family characterised almost universally by egg-scattering open spawning — the species is expected to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or into open water during a brief spawning embrace.

Hobbyist observations of Phenacogaster cf. capitulata note that males in breeding condition display intensified orange fin colouration and white dorsal-fin tips, which appear to function as visual signals to females and rival males during courtship. Courtship behaviour typical of the family involves brief parallel displays and rapid circling before the spawning embrace. No information is available on seasonality of spawning in wild populations.

Breeding

Phenacogaster capitulata has not been bred in captivity under documented, published conditions, and detailed breeding parameters — egg count, incubation time, fry development — are not available in the literature or from hobby sources consulted. Based on the general reproductive biology of small Amazonian characids, captive breeding would likely follow the standard egg-scattering pattern: a conditioned pair or group spawning over fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, depositing small adhesive eggs that the adults do not guard and will readily consume.

For any serious breeding attempt, separating the adults from the eggs immediately after spawning and rearing the fry in a dedicated container with very fine first foods (infusoria, rotifers, commercial liquid fry food) is the standard approach for fish of this size. The species' small adult size means the fry would be extremely tiny at hatching. Water temperature in the mid-20s Celsius and soft, slightly acidic water matching the natural habitat would be the logical starting point for conditioning and spawning attempts.

In the aquarium

Phenacogaster capitulata is an uncommon aquarium fish, appearing mainly as Peruvian wild-caught imports labelled Phenacogaster cf. capitulata — the 'cf.' reflecting the difficulty of confirming species identity without laboratory examination. It is a peaceful, shoaling species best kept in a group of six or more to express natural schooling behaviour and reduce individual stress. Given its small size (around 1 in) it is suited to nano and species tanks as well as community set-ups with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates.

Hobbyist accounts emphasise the benefit of dim lighting and a dark substrate, which appears to reduce wariness and encourages the species to remain visible and active in the water column rather than hiding. Fine-leaved planting and driftwood decoration mimicking a forest stream provide cover and visual interest. Water should be warm and soft to moderately soft, in keeping with the Ucayali lowlands origin; avoid hard alkaline conditions. The species is described as undemanding in terms of diet and hardy once established, making it a rewarding subject for hobbyists interested in less commonly kept Peruvian characins.

Conservation

Phenacogaster capitulata is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment reflecting the near-total absence of population, range, and trend data for this species. Data Deficient is not a conservation category indicating low risk — it signals that insufficient information exists to make a meaningful assessment, and that the species could prove to be threatened once adequate data are gathered.

The Rio Neshuya type locality lies within the Ucayali Department of Peru, a region experiencing ongoing forest clearance, agricultural expansion, and oil and gas development. While the broader Ucayali drainage is large, small forest streams such as those inhabited by Phenacogaster species are among the habitats most vulnerable to localised disturbance. Given that most Phenacogaster species were described from very limited museum material and have never been the subject of field population surveys, the true status of capitulata in the wild remains unknown. Collection for the aquarium trade in Peru, though not focused on this species specifically, adds a further low-level pressure on wild populations of small characids across the region.
