Phenacogaster carteri is a slender, small characid reaching about 1.5 in standard length, known from the Cuyuni River basin of Guyana. Named in honour of the Cambridge zoologist George Stuart Carter, who led the expedition during which the holotype was collected, it is one of several Phenacogaster species distributed across South American lowland drainages. In the aquarium hobby it remains little-seen; most of what is known of its biology comes from field-collected material and the shared reproductive habits of the family.

Taxonomy & naming

Phenacogaster carteri was described by J.R. Norman in 1934 on the basis of material collected from the Cuyuni River, Guyana. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name with a parenthetical authority — (Norman, 1934) — reflecting that the original description placed the species in a different genus and it was subsequently moved to Phenacogaster. The species is assigned to the subfamily Characinae within the large family Characidae.

The genus Phenacogaster is a South American characid assemblage found in rivers across the Orinoco, Amazon, and adjacent drainages. Members are small, slender fish that can be superficially similar to other small tetras but are distinguished by a combination of dentition, scalation, and the absence of the humeral blotch — a dark shoulder mark common in related genera. Phenacogaster carteri specifically lacks a humeral blotch in both sexes, a character noted in FishBase's summary for the species.

Morphology

Phenacogaster carteri is a small, slender fish with a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. Like other members of the genus it has the compressed, somewhat elongate body plan typical of small Characinae, with the fins and body proportions of a free-swimming midwater tetra.

The absence of a humeral blotch distinguishes it from many similarly sized characids. Beyond this character, detailed meristic data for P. carteri specifically are sparse in the accessible literature; the species has the general appearance of a small, lightly patterned silver tetra. Sexual differences in colour or body depth may exist — as in other Phenacogaster — but are not well documented for this species from available sources.

Habitat

The known range of Phenacogaster carteri is the Cuyuni River basin of Guyana, where the type locality was established from material collected during George Stuart Carter's Cambridge University expedition. The Cuyuni drains the interior Guiana Shield and flows westward into Venezuela before joining the Essequibo system, running across a landscape of tropical forest and savanna.

FishBase classifies the species as freshwater benthopelagic, indicating it occupies the lower to mid water column in riverine habitat. Detailed habitat parameters — temperature range, pH, conductivity — have not been formally characterised for this species in the accessible literature, though Guiana Shield drainages typically feature warm, soft, acidic to near-neutral blackwater or clearwater conditions. Feeding

Based on the biology of closely related small Characinae, Phenacogaster carteri is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner. Adults would scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate, with no parental care following spawning; adults may consume eggs after spawning if given the opportunity, as is typical for tetras.

No captive breeding account for P. carteri was located in the sources consulted. Aquarists working with similar small Characinae typically separate adults from eggs immediately after spawning, raise eggs in soft, slightly acidic, low-conductivity water at 79–82 °F, and feed hatched fry infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods before transitioning to nauplius-stage brine shrimp. Phenacogaster carteri is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever available in the trade. It is essentially unknown in the hobby beyond its original field collection, and no care accounts have been documented in the accessible literature.

For aquarists who encounter wild-caught specimens from Guiana Shield localities, the general approach for small, delicate Characinae from soft-water drainages would apply: a mature, well-filtered aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water, gentle flow, subdued lighting, and fine-leaved or floating plants. Keeping the species in a small group is likely preferable to single specimens, as most small tetras show less stress and more natural behaviour in conspecific company. Given the lack of any documented captive experience, P. carteri should be considered a challenging and little-studied species rather than a standard aquarium fish.

Conservation

Phenacogaster carteri is listed as Data Deficient (DD) by FishBase, with an assessment date of November 16, 2020. Data Deficient indicates that insufficient information exists to make a direct or indirect assessment of extinction risk; it is not a category of low concern but a flag for inadequate knowledge. The species' range is restricted to the Cuyuni River basin of Guyana. While the Cuyuni and broader Guiana Shield region retain large expanses of intact rainforest, the basin faces ongoing pressures from alluvial gold mining, which degrades water quality through sedimentation and mercury contamination. Without dedicated survey work confirming the current population status of P. carteri, its conservation situation cannot be properly evaluated. Taxonomic and distributional research on the genus Phenacogaster as a whole would help determine whether this species is genuinely rare or simply under-collected.
