Taxonomy & naming
Piabucus melanostoma was described by Eduardo Ladislao Holmberg in 1891, with the original description published in Revista Argentina de Historia Natural (Buenos Aires, v. 1: 192). The type locality spans two sites: Formosa (Chaco) in Argentina and Asunción, Paraguay. No type specimens are known to be deposited in a major collection. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) treats the name as valid, with the authority parenthesised as (Holmberg, 1891).
The genus Piabucus belongs to the family Iguanodectidae, a small South American characiform family that includes also the iguanodectins — slender, silver-bodied fishes of lowland floodplain and river-edge habitats. The family has historically been placed in varying positions within the broad Characiformes order; molecular work has progressively clarified its placement but the group remains less studied than the larger characid radiation.
Morphology
Piabucus melanostoma is a moderately elongate fish reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in. The body form is typical of the genus: laterally compressed, streamlined, and suited to an active mid-water and near-bottom lifestyle. Coloration is silvery overall, with the most distinctive feature being the dark pigmentation of the lower lip and chin — the 'black mouth' encoded in the species name — which is the primary external character by which this species is identified.
Fins are unremarkable and transparent to lightly pigmented.
